Batavia Wins Drama of District Bethel Tourney Concludes

In Clermont County the Bethel district tournament ends with Batavia defeating Williamsburg 42 to 80 to reach the Cincinnati district finals. Amelia, Moscow, Milford, Goshen, and Owensville compete as Williams Batavia claims the three consecutive trophy title. We note Williams Batavia secures runner up and all squads receive commendations. Supt Johnson attends along with state athletic officials.

Batavia church plans a dedication service for newly purchased hymn books and orchestra works. Services set for Sunday morning March 5 with an evening service, Lenten observances begin March 1, chaired by Stanley Huber and Olive Bauer.

The weekly county basketball schedule lists Williamsburg hosting Batavia on Wednesday and Friday games with Batavia visiting Moscow on Saturday and Anrelia visiting Williamsburg. A result shows House of David 49 Williamsburg 33 on February 26 in Williamsburg.

Bond sale assured for Bethel waterworks project

It was learned Saturday that the $36,000 Bethel waterworks bond issue has been taken over by the Reconstruction Finance Corporation of Washington D C. This points to an early start on the proposed plant long delayed for lack of buyers. Williams burg plans a $90,000 electric light plant and expects the same FCC to handle its bonds.

The state pike between Batavia and Mt Carmel is breaking up with holes and heavy wear. The road, a major county artery, carries many trucks daily from Cincinnati and requires repair to save the bed.

Clermont County Farm Bureau seeks bridge replacements on SR 74

The Clermont County Farm Bureau Board of Directors met in Batavia on Thursday night February 28 and passed a resolution urging the state department of highways to replace the obsolete Batavia and Williamsburg bridges on state route 74 with safe structures. The action calls for funding from outside county funds and notifies Governor White the Director of Highways Merrill Claude Coyle David DeArmond and others.

Rural farmers eye large tobacco crop this spring

The text notes a general trend toward a very large tobacco crop as farmers plow and prepare. Farmers who have not grown tobacco before claim it is the only crop delivering ready cash to meet expenses. The milk situation is discouraging unless a union is formed.

Mrs Galen Filager hosted a surprise party Saturday evening February 25 at her home honoring her husband. The gathering included 20 relatives and friends with music games and contests. A fruit salad cake and coffee luncheon followed as guests wished him many happy returns.

Fire destroyed the home of Mrs Laura Doughman in Newtownsville. The loss was insured. The Red Cross provided clothing and supplies to the distressed family.

Flour Supply For Clermont County Needy Extends To Fifth Car

An order for another car of flour was filed for Clermont County and will arrive soon. This marks the fifth car load ordered to aid the needy, preventing hunger in old Clermont.

Health Seals sale closes. funds aid needy in county

County secretary Mrs. 8 W Sprague sent 48 dollars to the Ohio Public Health Association in Columbus as the sale of Health Seals closed. The remaining county funds will feed undernourished children, tubercular cases, and others needing assistance. The Health League thanks all contributors for their aid.

The Batavia weekly stock sale last Wednesday sponsored by J A Bissantz opened at 10 a m and ran past 6 p m with two auctioneers. Horses and mules from afar sold well and hogs and shoats offered in abundance. Odds and ends fetched bargains including wearing apparel canned goods hardware. Many buyers including women attended and overall the sale was very successful. Henry Hauck’s sale on the adjoining farm drew strong attendance and good cash prices. Miss Clara Steward of Marathon entertained friends Tuesday evening February 21 for her 17th birthday. Games were played and a good time enjoyed. Sandwiches coffee fruit salad and cake were served.

New Bridges Favored by Farm Bureau and Union Board

At a Clermont County Farm Bureau meeting last Friday members endorsed building new bridges on Route 74 at Batavia and Williamsburg. The Union township school board also backed the plans. Petitions are circulating to support the effort as locals urge action to prevent a potential disaster.

Lincoln and Washington program at Mt. Carmel Grange

The Mt. Carmel Grange hosted a Feb 18 program attended by most Juvenile Grange members. The lineup included plays I Would Tell and Lincoln and the Little Girl, readings, a Lincoln talk, and a medley of patriotic songs. John B E Collins Jr is named deputy auditor by Auditor Ketchum for Milford district to list and assess tax on tangible and intangible property from Feb 16 to March 31. He serves at Milford National Bank with no fees. The Main Street bridge abutment on the south wing has partially fallen, signaling further collapse.

Family Grows in Sheriff Auxier's Office Ten Men and Two Women

Sheriff Auxier reports his family in the office has expanded from two to twelve with a father and daughter among them. Ten of the twelve are said to be from out of state as he continues to hunt a fourth suspect in the tobacco theft case.

Minstrel Show and Carnival Planned by Batavia Legion

The Frank W. Weaver Post of the American Legion will stage a minstrel show and carnival at the Batavia armory on Saturday night, March 25. The show is free, but a dime admission will be charged for the Freaks and other acts. Proceeds go toward paying the Legion’s pledge on the Batavia fire truck.

Fugitives Captured In Mulberry Tobacco Theft Case

Dewey Baker of Mulberry was arrested in Cincinnati and jailed after being linked with Roy Elder and Everett Kramer in the February 6 theft of 3,500 pounds of tobacco from a Hathman farm. The tobacco moved to Covington, Kentucky, before the trio’s arrest and grand jury action in March. Dewey Baker escaped from the farm but was recaptured with Sheriff Auxier and Deputy Brooks on Sycamore Street. Brother William Baker remains at large.
