State examiner reports on Clermont county treasurer office praise for George Maxfield who succeeded W B E McKeever and took office September 1921. Records show lawful administration, neat files, accurate accounting of fees and funds, and faithful, hands on service maintaining low clerical costs.
In Clermont County Common Pleas Court Judge Joseph presided over a will dispute Anna Barns vs. Margaret A. Ferree. A 12 woman jury, the district’s first, returned a verdict for the plaintiff in a roughly 1500 dollar estate with five heirs. Jurors were Anna South Anna Kain Mary Nash Edna Hugo Alma Horn Ethel Wilson Elizabeth Marsh Pearl Leonard Nettie Carroll Mary Barbeau Edel Slade Margaret Dial.
The Postoffice Department says within five years at least 100 million dollars was stolen from 500 thousand investors by dishonest oil stock promoters. Laws are often inadequate. the remedy is for people to invest only in enterprises they know or to entrust funds to solvent, honest institutions.
The U B Convention sessions drew delegates and visitors from Hamilton Dayton and Clough. Dr Brewbaker of Dayton gave an engaging address and a Sunday pageant delighted the audience. Batavia boys beat their opponents 17 to 2 in Saturday’s ball game.
The eight room brick home of Harry J. Wood in Newtonsville burned Tuesday night from an unknown cause. Tenant Mr. Sebree lost his entire household goods. no insurance. Building insured for 2000 with Ohio Farmers.
Newark Ohio June 22 The Ohio State Sunday School Association closed a remarkable convention with record delegate registration over 1 700 representative of every county. Plans for 1924 include enrolling 2 500 members at 10 each raising 25 000 to fund the budget of 40 000 to clear the association deb t and expand extension work. Officers were reelected Dr W G Clippinger Arthur T Arnold and John P Aiken. Dayton will host the 1924 convention.
Cincinnati groom John L. Weaver weds Rose Newberry of Batavia on June 19 at Rev. Burdsall’s home with Lafayette Weaver and Mrs Burdsall present. Charles W. Shafer weds Ellen Merel Ross on June 20 with F. F. Ross and others. William F. Busch weds Geneva Cramer on June 28 at Rev. Burdsall’s home. reception follows in Williamsburg.
Louie Heffler a Hungarian resident south of Batavia was arrested Friday afternoon by State Prohibition Agent Chas Lucas. In court he pleaded guilty to possessing equipment to manufacture moonshine and mash was found in his possession. he received a $500 fine and jail time for nonpayment, his third arrest after earlier incidents involving his son John.
Estate filings include partial accounts suspended for Conred O. B. Kaelin and others, final accounts for several minors, and sales or estates actions. Notices cover guardians, bonds, and court orders for recording, private sales of stocks, and distribution. Will provisions name Clara A. Canter and Elizabeth Woesten as executrix and widow beneficiaries across several estates.
Clermont Experiment Farm notes a first spring lamb consignment of 17 head weighing 962 pounds at the farm and 890 pounds after yard shrink. They sold for 15 dollars per cwt, gross 183.50, yardage 2.10, commission 4.25, hauling 4.45 totaling 10.80, net cash 122.70. Net value per head 7.22 and 12.75 per hundred at the farm. Marketing cost per hundred 2.08 based on 962 pounds. Average farm weight 56.6 pounds, yard weight 52.3 pounds. Lambs are Shropshire from grade ewes with a new pure bred ram. At the meeting on Monday June 18 the County Commissioners passed a resolution extending the time of payment of June taxes to July 20. The measure is a common practice across the state and favors many taxpayers.
The Olive Branch pike road to Highland Park will be repaired under a three party funding plan. The Rotary Club of Cincinnati leases the park for five years and contributes $200 while county commissioners and trustees each provide $200. The work aims to connect the Grant Highway with the pike to the city.
County Agent Clyde Tom purchased the John Hahn place west of Batavia on the Cincinnati pike. He plans a chicken farm and country home, planting pine posts and fruit trees, with an up-to-date house later, about five minutes by auto from town. He is an expert chicken man with other business interests.
A July 4 1928 community gathering at Owensville fair grounds Ohio invites families and friends to a social day with no entrance fee. Races games contests and refreshments on the grounds with music from a good band.
A known local tomato grower reports a lice infestation on vines with yellowing leaves and wilt risk. He advises making nicotine spray from tobacco and water to protect and nourish plants. He notes harvest progress remains fair but few ripe tomatoes will be ready for July 4th. The Batavia Rebekah degree staff visited Amelia lodge to continue their work.
In Georgetown on Wednesday General Manager Nichols and Superintendent Vaness said wage talks with the car men's union show the books prove the wage demand cannot be met and embargoes may follow. They foresee a brief, decisive struggle likely to end in receivership for the Cincinnati Georgetown and Portsmouth railroad as a prelude to a nationwide challenge to one man car service.
A batch of property transfers in Milford Batavia Pierce Goshen and nearby areas records sales from G W to M E Adams to Irene Husbaum and many others with $1 deeds. Transfers include 5 to 148 acres in Brown Clermont Goshen Pierce Tate and Monroe townships with lots in Loveland Williamsburg and Amelia. Mortgage activity shows last week mortgages recorded and cancellations releasing 24046 dollars.
The Milford church was dedicated last Sunday before a large audience of officials and visitors. A chicken dinner was served at noon in the basement, and the new structure is praised as one of the state's finest for a town of its size. The congregation thanks are given for completing the building quickly. Infertile egg notes follow, mentioning incubation conditions and farm practices for fertilized and infertile eggs.
Clermont county wheat is unusually good this year though overall state yields dip. Stem rust threatens in ten days with favorable weather. Report any crop disease to the county agent. The Burley Pool Tobacco Association and twenty stockholders of the Batavia Loose Leaf Warehouse bought the property at sheriff sale to operate as a Pool House for tobacco deliveries. It will be improved before fall as one of the county’s largest crops nears grading, central for shipping and expected to boost Batavia’s business for four months. The Glen Rose post office has been discontinued and patrons will use Route 1 from Newtown.
