Calf roping show sponsored by Midwest Riders 4 H Club

A calf roping event hosted by the Midwest Riders 4 H Club is set for Sunday June 29 at 4 p.m. at the Mike Jones farm on Bucktown Road four miles east of Owensville off SR 50. Entry by call and free to the public.

Duly 4 Horse Show Details English and Western Competitions

The event features an 8:30 a.m. English competition judged by Harris with $2 and $4 per class fees and ribbons. At 1 p.m. the Western competition has 16 classes with $2 $3 and $4 per class prizes of cash payback plus ribbons. A gate donation of $1 is requested for those over 12. The showbill is at the church office or by calling 752 1333. Food will be on the grounds and shade trees offer viewing comfort.

Red Cross CPR class offered in New Richmond

Cincinnati Area Chapter of the American Red Cross hosts a CPR course at New Richmond Council Chambers from 7 to 10 p.m. on July 9 and 10. Materials cost 3 dollars. instruction is free. To register call the Red Cross First Aid Services Department at 579-3027 or 553-4146, weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The class covers mouth to mouth breathing one and two person CPR choking rescue for conscious and unconscious victims infant mouth to mouth and infant CPR.

Riverfest Run in New Richmond July 26

The Riverfest Run 3.1 mile race sponsored by Southwestern Ohio Lung Association will be held Saturday July 26 at 9 a.m. as part of Riverfest 80 activities in New Richmond. The 5000 meter course is shaded, flat and on asphalt. Pre registration ends July 12. For an entry form call 751-3650.

The YWCA offers swimming sessions at the Girls Friendly Society outdoor pool on Clermontville Laurel Road and SR 52 near New Richmond. July 1 to August 8 with breaks on July 4, schedules Tue Thu 10 am to 2 pm and Fri 5 pm to 9 pm. Instructors Pat Hill and Mary Richmond. Call 732-0450 for pre registration.

Born Reelected GOP Chairman Amid Board Turmoil

Longtime Republican John Watson was reelected party chairman by a 12 to 2 vote with one abstention at the June 19 meeting as two Democrats joined Carson on the board. Nisbet blasted Carson's defeat as an “atrocity” and alleged a last minute vote change. Carson pledged to continue the effort, seek legal advice, and build stronger support.

Board of Elections Finds a Bargain on Equipment

The Board of Elections considers a bargain purchase of voting equipment including marking devices. Ed ward Osborne cites $150 per used unit versus $300 new and notes aging booths. Prices for polling devices have doubled from $75 to $150. Two large precincts may split into more precincts, with only $1400 available for the purchase.

Union Township and county seek 3 percent motel tax

Fran Schwiermann and commissioners plan to enact a three percent excise tax on motels at the June 26 meeting before the deadline. The measure aims to fund a county level convention bureau, with one third distributed to township trustees, while unions township eyes local tax use for tourism and potential motel development spurred by new hotels at Union Township.

Better RBC drive system tested at LEF sewer plant

Fran Schwiermann reports on the Lower East Fork treatment plant where rotating biological contactors RBCs are being modified. If the revised drive is successful it could be implemented across all 27 units, with Autotrol Corp experimenting on larger drive cups. The plant serves about 25 000 people and may reach 50 000, and May discharge permits were not met but current units satisfy EPA requirements.

County to expand health benefits for employees

Blue Cross Blue Shield offered the lowest bid for expanded health coverage, costing about 66 000 annually for 216 county workers. Total insurance costs rise to 135 000 for general agencies, with a renewal year boosting to 280 000 due to high claims. Mary Rains noted a 40 percent increase over last year.
