A Bethel village resolution calls residents to approve a 3 mill tax increase at the August 9 primary to cover current operating expenses as salaries have been unpaid for two months. A March 15 election failed with 48 percent in favor. 65 percent needed for passage.
A W P A meeting at the Armory Friday night drew men women and children. Fred Sells of Williamsburg chaired the gathering which considered 50 cents per member monthly for club purposes. Edward T. Rees of Williamsburg spoke as the main speaker amid a spirited debate on work hours and grievance handling by a standing committee.
Judges and their associates plus Mrs Wells and Miss Surtz attended a dinner in Nichols Park on Thursday. The highlight was a 50 pound sturgeon caught by Judge Wood in Canada last week. The Nichols family enjoyed moving pictures by Judge Marx.
Batavia Village Council cleaned Main Street on Friday to welcome visitors for the Masonic anniversary. They suggest weekly cleaning and a public rear parking lot by the armory to serve courthouse employees and the transient public when spaces are tight.
Captain Henry Ratterman led 375 men of the Cincinnati National Guard in a Saturday night encampment on Tyler's Island near Batavia. The unit slept in pup tents and enjoyed camp life before returning to Cincinnati Sunday night.
A Chillicothe bound truck from Nick Myrick collided with another rig on the pike near Owensville Sunday morning. The wreck blocked the road until a wrecking crew cleared the scene.
A Collier's Weekly writer notes CO2 has a far greater effect than O2 on respiration. A 3 percent rise in blood CO2 can double breathing rate, while a 3 percent drop can halt breathing. The piece warns that even small CO2 changes have strong impacts, more than oxygen deprivation.
The cantata The Garden of Youth will be performed at Mt Moriah Methodist Church Tabasco Sunday at 8 PM with Mrs Geo H Davis directing. The Christian Endeavor Young People and Sunday School children form the choir with Miss Mary Alice Greenwald on piano and Mrs May Hawkins on organ. Special parts feature Miss Jane Beckett Miss Jane and Mrs Emma Shannon Mrs Grace Wilfert and Miss Constance Tiege. Gene and Dick Adams of Newtown will perform trumpet and accordion solos. C E Bulen pastor will speak. Public invited.
Mary Lou Rogers became the bride of Jack Lee Curtis at the bride’s parents home in Oxford Monday. Rev Paul Rugg officiated with 50 guests at a reception. The couple will reside in New Richmond after a wedding trip. Curtis is secretary to Judge John Mausermann of Manila. The bride holds an M A from Miami University.
Limited funds and strict quota rules delay many Clermont county WPA applicants who are eligible. District official in Cincinnati says first applicants are given priority and remaining need funds for new projects before appointments can be made.
After a hard week of night games, the Milford Merchants defeated Winspear Insurance 7 to 6 on the Batavia grounds to claim softball honors. Seventeen teams competed sponsored by Batavia Eagles with Elmer Kinner and Boots Kinner announcing official scores.
All Republicans in the county are invited to a meeting in Bata in the Conference room to organize a young Republican Club to take action for the primary and fall election. Republicans are urged to attend. The date is June 22.
Advertisements of 16 county road projects to be let July 5 were published in county papers today. County Commissioners met in adjourned session at the Courthouse and approved engineer estimates and authorized contract letting totaling about 11 000 dollars for blacktop work on roads including McKeever Road Hells Half Acre Centerville Batavia Franklin Corad dale Goshen Marathon Glancy Corner Jackson Milford Loveland Lindale Laurel North Lindale Nichols ville Monroe Chapel Stonelick Williams Corner Bethel Maple Beechwood Union Neville Penn Washington and New Richmond Nichols ville Ohio.
Cincinnati Merchants stormed into third place by routing Locust Ridge 20 to 6 as four pitchers were used. McIntosh collected seven hits in as many at bats while Whalen pitched well for the Merchants. Francis Garage won 9 to 5 over Chile Hi Port with loose fielding aiding the Garage defense. The Batavia Tigers notched their third straight win 19 to 10 at Goshen. Next Sunday’s schedule features Batavia at Williamsville, Goshen A C versus Perry A C, and Mt. Crab facing the Merchants.
Ohio motorists may receive a 15 percent premium refund under a safety experience plan approved by Attorney General Herbert S. Duffy at the request of the state insurance division. The plan refunds 15 percent to drivers with no accidents, while 85 percent is earned if an accident occurs. Estimated refunds start around 3.50 dollars.
Rev. Smith of Batavia will officiate as chaplain and Deputy Wright Wolf will welcome attendees at the County Wide Grange Memorial Services. Guest speaker will be Rev. W. C. Columbus notes the state civil service commission asks for a 25000 grant from the emergency board to fund examinations for about 4000 workers who will handle unemployment compensation disbursements in 1939. Through June 1 the fund totaled 71514293 and is expected to reach 110 million by year start. about 50 million in benefits may be paid next year. Robert Hoffman and wife spent a week in Chicago.
The Clermont County Grand Jury, meeting for a two day session begun April term, reported nine true bills and one ignored case after examining twenty five witnesses. Indictments include Biel Moran burglaries and larcenies, Harger auto theft, Parker and Williams reckless driving and DWI, Thoreman brothers larceny, Colwell no consent, Moore DWI, Nickell reckless driving and DWI. Jury foreman Vernie Schoolie released the report. list of jurors includes Lucille Schobert, Freeman Stowell, Dave Watson, Mayme Reed, Blanch Evans, Addie Davis, Hugh Howell, Pearl Binning, Hazel Schwey, Myrtle Wilson, Dorothy Idlett, J. S. Griffith, Clem McGahan, Wm. Keen and Vernie Schoolie. Parish as stated.
The Georgetown highway patrol sub-station is now settled with three officers on duty and a fourth to join soon. Corporal Kratzer leads Patrolman Cherry Holmes and Patrolman Willis in the district extending from the Hamilton county line to West Union and from Hillsboro to the river. The station is reachable day or night at Georgetown 224.
Allen B. Nichols of Nichols Speidel and Nichols and George W. Gregg, prominent Batavia residents, will travel from Amherst to New York and onward to Madison Square Garden tonight to witness the Louis Schmeling heavyweight bout.
A fire of undetermined origin destroyed the home and contents of George Reither on Bear Creek six miles southwest of Pelicity. Loss included a sum of money and several antique guns from Reither’s collection. he lives alone and could not estimate the total loss.
Mrs. Olin Fagin traveled to New York last week to visit Mr. and Mrs. Danna Grene of Ithaca. The Grenes are listed as Mrs. Fagin's hosts during the trip.
Mrs. H. G. Horn of Williamsburg reported a carrier pigeon wandering among her chickens yesterday. The bird has pale yellow markings and a leg band reading N. P. A. 3607.
The Summerside M E Sunday School will hold its Annual Cradle Roll Day next Sunday June 26 The event invites Cradle Roll members and their parents to attend a baby focused program not expected to be long Special numbers from the Hance family and Cradle Roll Department will be performed and souvenirs given to each baby present Be sure to come.
At a Wednesday meeting in the Courthouse the Clermont county Election Board opened bids for primary ballots and awarded the contract to The Clermont Sun at a low bid of 19 000 ballots for 672 dollars. Frank White, Clerk of the Board, confirmed the award.
The Jolly Stickers 4H Club will hold a bake sale at Olive Branch Church on Saturday July 2 starting at 2 PM and running through the evening.
Cincinnati's seventeenth summer opera season opens Sunday June 26 at 7 00 PM in the Zoo Opera House with Verdi's Il Trovatore. The 2500 seat outdoor venue features a roof, rain curtains, nightly performances aside from Mondays, and a roster of famed international singers led by conductor Fausto Cleva. Tickets range from 25 cents to 2 dollars, include Zoo admission, and reservations can be sent to the Cincinnati Summer Opera Association.
