The Local Board rules non productive work loses deferment. Registrants with late order numbers may be urged to enter productive employment or military service. Idle registrants lose deferment and owe grounds for withdrawal. The 1918 regulation lists non productive roles such as food service, elevator work, ushers in events, domestic service, and store clerks. Grounds for idle status include sickness or lack of suitable opportunities.
Milford residents gathered at the town hall to protest the proposed junking of the OC M and L traction line. Milton Roudebush was named chairman and H L Schroeder secretary as D W Murphy outlined aims. Hearing moved to Cincinnati with a June 20 session at Gibson House.
The War Weekly lauds Col John T. Thompson and his Small Arms Division for exceptional rifle and cartridge output. It credits his aides Maj L P Johnston and others in surrounding him, noting Johnston, son of Robert L. Johnston of Moscow and Johnston Print Co., Cincinnati, is well regarded for government work.
A Saturday school grounds game between Methodist and Presbyterian Sunday schools drew a large crowd. The Presbyterians won 15 to 5 as former players showed off revived skills amid lively applause for good plays on both sides.
The new pension law expands benefits for Civil War survivors. It raises monthly rates to 30 for those with 90 days to six months service, 82 for those 72+ with six months, 38 for two years, and 40 for longer service. Automatica lly apply to current pensioners aged eligible. A dedicated bureau will process cases. about 268,000 beneficiaries remain under May 11, 1912.
Columbus leaders say conscience must guide draft age men toward productive war work or non productive roles as Crowder’s order nears July 1. Officials warn local boards will review employment changes and reclassify registrants to correct Deferred classifications. married status rules and broad scope rulings expected soon.
Special services were conducted at Batavia Baptist Church last Sunday with preaching and prayer. A truck load of 50 attendees arrived from Hyde Park and nearby areas.
Word of the death in action of Robert Bateman Decatur of Plainville, a popular young man and stepson of Wright Fitzwater, has been received. He enlisted in the Marines May 9, 1917 and fell in battle June 5, 1918. He played with the Madisonville A. C. baseball club and has two brothers in service Elmer headed to France and Alfred at Paris Island. Arthur pitched for the Nashville club. Ernst Bickmore and wife visited Oleona Searle's family.
County readers urged to hear from soldiers in service with brief local letters, names optional. On June 6, 148 Adams County men registered since turning 21 since June 6, 1917, 15 unable to sign papers. Education praised as plentiful and free on request.
The Clermont County Federation of Woman's Clubs met at Milford's M E church with strong turnout. The program featured Welcome by Mrs M E Ketcham, reports from the Biennial, and a series of recitals, papers, solos, and readings including Kentucky Cinderella and The Old Fashioned Wife.
In Batavia a fire from a film reel at the town hall disrupted a Saturday matinee. Janitor Geo Lewis operator Wilbur Zurmuhle and helper Clarence Zimmerman rewound seven reels failing to prevent a blaze that damaged seats woodwork and a new fixture. Firefighters arrived quickly. hall extinguisher ruined. water unused due to unpowered hose. Damage about 100 dollars to hall 350 to films 80 to equipment and Kain’s loss.
The Louise Reese farm in Elk Lick was sold by administrator Edwin Ely to the highest bidder S. Thacker from Bethel for 15100, above its 14600 appraisal. The farm on Haat Fork is now occupied by Thomas Brooks, noted for corn and hogs, with 12 acres of waste land on the property.

A. C. Stark of Batavia was returning from Williamsburg with Joseph Livengood's team when a freight train cleaved the team at a crossing near Afton. One horse was killed and the others escaped. The incident prompts calls for electric warning gongs at crossings to prevent further tragedies.
Readers are urged to inspect ripening wheat for joint worm infestations that can halve yields in sections where six green worms per stalk are observed. Sparrows are also raiding the golden grain, with no known remedy at this stage. Public reliance on a promising crop of wheat oats and rye makes prompt checks essential.
Two deserters from Camp Lee Virginia were captured by Sheriff Swing and deputy Eltom Miller when they fled a Batavia freight at the Saturday stop. Shots fired forced surrender. The pair, dirty and claiming to be returning home, were jailed then sent to Ft Thomas with charges pending. No reward due as they had not been away ten days.
Two more men faced call for 1A service and left Friday for duty. Chas F Witt of near Hamlet, 26, with 60 acres, may need release to finish crops. Richard Harcourt of Loveland, a vulcanizer, could go without risk. Pete Wasner works at G and Bernard and is progressing well.
