Provost Marshal General Crowder directed draft executives in all states to begin mailing questionnaires to registrants of the class of 1918 on June 25 for three days. Twenty five percent of registrants per board receive forms daily, with serial and order number spaces left blank until July classification. Work varies by county and few registrants will be 21 this year.

Lewis G. Swing brother of Sheriff Bert F. Swing died at his Bethel area home Thursday June 22 1918 in his 60th year. Funeral services were held there Saturday at 1 p m conducted by Revs Williams and Fisher. He leaves a wife five brothers two sisters and many relatives and friends who will miss him.
The county food administration committee was reorganized with Rev. R. B. Wilton as chairman and Mrs. J. J. Werner as secretary. Other officers include H. C. Altman mills and feed dealers, Cleona Searles baker, Rev. R. B. Wilson hotels and restaurants, Mrs. J. J. Werfer grocers, Mrs. P. F. Jamieson Fleur Carde, and Rev. Wm. H. Tilford publicity. Information and enforcement details follow the rules on sugar and beef rationing, licensing for egg dealers, and reporting violations to the secretary.

Columbus Ohio June 21 1918 the Ohio War Savings committee issues yellow cards to log why individuals refuse War Savings Stamps. Cards held by county chairs will guide a June 24 28 pledge drive and record personal details and reasons for noncompliance. Public inspection of collected cards is planned after canvass.
Progressive farmers from across the county attended the Annual Wheatfield Day at Clermont county Experiment Farm last Wednesday. Prof. H C Batchel discussed Soil Fertility and Increasing the Wheat Crop for 1919, with practical points for farmers. Prof. C Hayden spoke on Dairy Farming, and C D Parks and A Barker delivered talks. A farm tour and the customary basket dinner concluded the event.
The Times Star reports division headquarters announces furloughing officers and soldiers are entitled to travel passes and the one cent per mile rate. A misunderstanding had caused many to pay three cents per mile when the lower rate applied. Secure your pass before leaving headquarters.
Reverend Wegner drove to Chillicothe on Tuesday and plans to return Thursday with his family who have been visiting there.
The Williamsburg chautauqua season launches Monday July 8 with five days of afternoon lectures concerts and evening programs. Junior Chautauqua mornings feature youth activities and notable acts include Chester Birch Dr Chas G Jordan Ralph Dunbar's Royal Dragoons Fisk Jubilee Singers and Noah Beilharz with a season ticket priced at $2 plus federal war tax.
Allen B. Nichols reports Clermont townships contributed 130,868 dollars to the Second Red Cross War Fund, over 30 percent above the county quota. Details list township by township gifts, noting Miami, outside Milford and Loveland, and Goshen did not receive Cincinnati Bell funds but aided Hamilton County efforts.

Leona King daughter of Mr and Mrs Chas King Valley View Farm celebrated her sixteenth birthday Saturday June 16 with about 66 guests from Amelia Lindale Williamsburg Batavia and Elklick. The party featured music dancing and ice cream with cake. The Ashburn family of Ashburn visited Major John Ashburn and family at Columbus before their departure for Washington D C where he had been summoned.
County thrashers gathered in Batavia last Saturday to discuss rising costs and pricing for the season. No agreement on rates. rates suggested ranged from 6 to 9 cents with various formulas. D R Irwin, a 68 year veteran, will start thrashing in Goshen township next Friday and may retire at season's end. Registrants with farming experience may seek home exemption per State Food Administration appeal.
George R. Griffin, once a Batavia boy, now of Spencer Indiana, wins renomination with a strong majority for Joint Representative in the General Assembly covering Owen Sullivan and Green counties. He was greeted warmly by Batavians last week and praised for his continued success.
The armory hosted the second of twelve dances by a committee of young ladies. A large crowd attended from nearby towns and enjoyed first rate music and a congenial evening.
Paulina South Kahler born Owensville Ohio December 19 1843 joined the M E Church under Rev Spahr and died at Star City Indiana She married Henry Kahler September 18 1881 and they had one son who died in infancy She is survived by her husband a brother W E South and many friends.
The local early potato crop has been halved from earlier hopes. Few home grown potatoes are on the market as shipments arrive below standard quality, leaving buyers to rely on imported tubers.
The greatest field of speed demons will line up for the Annual Auto Derby at Cincinnati Speedway on Thursday afternoon July 4. Champions Louis Chevrolet and Dario Resta are among favorites with Barney Oldfield Johnny Aiken Ralph Mulford Ira Vail and Arthur Duray among others. The 100 mile handicap race at the world rapid course promises new records and record crowds with admission from 1 to 8 dollars.

The State G. A. R. Encampment in Hamilton drew over 4,000 veterans and wives for Friday’s parade closing the event. Next year’s encampment will be in Lima in 1919. Major S. R. West of Milford was named Junior Vice Commander and Rev. Edmund Burdsall of Winchester became Departmental Chaplain.
Bethel will host a five day Chautauqua starting July 9. The program promises value for attendees and the committee aims for success with the Coit Alber Company supplying up to date goods. The Junior Chautauqua is expected to benefit and receive good patronage.
The sewer extension at the foot of North street is finished and satisfactory. Tile laid to midstream to rely on current to prevent past trouble. The sanitary sewer to serve the school houses was installed by Tom Glancy and a crew, in a challenging water environment.
The second baseball game between the Methodist and Presbyterian Sunday schools drew a fair crowd at League Park Saturday afternoon. The Presbyterians dominated with sharper line up and timely hitting to post a 20 to 9 victory over the Methodists.
Checks for April allotments of pay and government insurance for dependents of soldiers were mailed from Washington on Friday May 2. If a check is not received, likely an address error and should be reported to the War Risk Insurance Bureau. None are missing though checks arrived late locally.
