The Epworth League Georgetown District holds its Fifth Annual Session at the Batavia M E church with about 500 attendees from Hamilton Warren Adams Brown and Clermont counties. The event features decor, prayers, addresses, papers, and a packed program under Rev G S Easton and J R Woodlief with Miss Mary Lane at the organ.

In Batavia last Saturday a Clermont Democratic convention selected 41 delegates and 41 alternates for the Congressional convention in Morrow and 8 delegates and alternates for the State convention in Columbus on June 23. Charles A. Whippy opened the meeting with W. B. Nichols named permanent chairman. C. A. Whippy and W. B. Applegate served as secretaries. Joins Ferris and Parrott named as State delegates. a long list of Congress delegates followed. Attendance was insufficient for full Congress delegation, so selections included many absent members. The convention instructed delegates to oppose any candidate not in favor of free silver and adjourned after adopting a free silver resolution.
Batavia Lodge K of P members were invited to the annual meeting and banquet of the Past Grand Chancellors in Cincinnati last week. Edward Buvinger attended and enjoyed the occasion despite the late invitation.
Batavia residents gather at the court house on Friday evening June 19 at 7 30 to form committees for the Clermont county teachers institute convening August 17. The executive committee will attend and a large turnout is urged. Western Star. Clark Burroughs, a Hamilton township boy, walked a mile daily to Foster's school for eight years without a tardy and received a gold medal for his faithfulness. He is expected to achieve more in the future.
A dispatch recalls a Mexican shoe factory scene of 20 to 80 girls toiling 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for 15 cents daily, a girl crying after being fired for a water break, cited as “Mexican prosperity on a silver basis.” It also notes a Bellevue school teacher dismissed for giving gifts to Scott Jackson and lampoons the episode with satirical legal jests.
A swarm of grasshoppers, millions strong, des toyed crops on the Marion Dunlap farm four miles north of Chillicothe, spreading five miles long and 500 yards wide and advancing toward town. Farmers face ruin as crops fruit and trees suffer. efforts to control them have failed. A temporary cyclone would be a relief if it carried the insects away.
In Adams county two beer kegs hidden in a well for two years were unearthed last week at 45 feet depth. The beer allegedly aged like port while underground but is spoiled now that it is exposed to air after resurfacing.
Fred Clemens a 16 year old Carmel boy is described as having a wheel mania. He is said to be constantly mounted on a rapidly moving wheel and to ride toward the sun, claiming ownership of all wheel designs. Last week he was found at Linwood in a disordered condition and examined.
The Ripley Bee mocks a grocer who claims low prices and tax avoidance while praising the paper as a roasting instrument. It argues the local paper should roast home merchants but also celebrate affordable goods. It quotes a testimonial: Simmons Liver Regulator cured wife’s headaches, per M B DeBord of Mt Vernon KY.
