Three Bound Over in County Court

Clermont County Court bound Harold R. Frey Jr 19 of SummerSide to the grand jury on a second degree manslaughter charge in the Feb 25 death of Donald P. Rapp. Both Frey and Ralph Hill were bound over on burglary charges related to theft of 1381 in harness racing equipment from tack rooms at the county fair grounds Owensville.

VFW Horse Show Slated Sunday

AFTON Clermont County Post 3954 Veterans of Foreign Wars hosts a 1 p.m. Sunday horse show at the post home on Greenbriar Road. Twelve events span horse and pony classes with trophies, ribbons for top four, and over $200 in prize money. The Clermont Western Saddle Club cooperates, and a 21 inch colored television will be awarded, installed free by Smith Television of Batavia.

West Clermont seeks bids for multiple school construction project

The West Clermont School Board invites bids for Project No. 853 with work including two new elementary schools on Clough Pike and Schoolhouse Rd plus additions at Gieneste and Amelia high schools. Architects Winkler Ranch Beeghly of Hamilton. Bids due July 13 at 12 noon at 1139 W Ohio Pike Amelia. Lunch to be served by VFW auxiliary.

Man Charged With Burglary

Charles E. Pumpelly 22 of 52 Mt. Holly Lane Amelia was arrested at 4 a.m. Tuesday for burglary after police caught him trying to load a large roll of copper wire from a construction storage garage. A local tipped police. The New Richmond ferry owned by Maurice Henderson broke from moorings Monday night and was recovered about two miles downstream.

Clermont County Board Considers Community College Plan

The Clermont County Board of Trustees and local officials met with Dr. John D. Millett to seek guidance on a master plan for a community college. They discussed state funding covering about 75 percent of building and land costs, with 25 percent locally raised, and estimated tuition at 250 to 300 dollars per student. A 1 mill levy could raise about 5,000 dollars annually to support the college as a survey moves forward.

Milford teacher attends five day reading seminar in Oklahoma City

Finetta J. Pyle, Milford South School first grade teacher, attends a five day seminar in Oklahoma City begun June 5. The Economy Company conducts the session teaching Phonetic Keys reading programs for grades 1-6 to qualify teachers as reading consultants. A water pump in the MGS system is broken and will take about a week to repair with urging to conserve water.

Batavia Minister Receives Chaplain Commission

Rev. W. Richard Waddle of Batavia receives a chaplain commission at the Ohio Miami Conference of the Evangelical United Brethren Church. He will report to Fort Hamilton New York on June 28 for basic training followed by nine weeks at Fort Hamilton. A farewell fellowship night for the Waddle family is planned at the Batavia Church Sunday June 25 at 7 p.m.

Merker Named News Director of WKTR TV

Carey Merker of Milford becomes news director at WKTR TV Dayton Ohio and directs the full news department including mobile units. The station broadcasts full color seven days a week with 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. news slots and covers a 70 mile tri state radius. Merker previously worked at WCPO SWAT and WUBE in Cincinnati and has a background in journalism and graduate study at Miami University.

Census TV survey to sample households nationwide

During the week of June 18 Census Bureau interviewers will survey households with television in this area and 448 other regions. Sponsored by the FCC the effort records color and black and white sets and ultra high frequency sets as part of a monthly Labor Statistics supplement. Names and addresses remain confidential. Also county officials seek bids until 10 am July 3 for two police cruiser automobiles.

Man Wounded In Shooting In New Richmond

Bird M Sergener 63 shot George Curtis 51 in the left shoulder Monday then charged him with impersonating a police officer and pointing firearms Curtis had visited Sergener’s home in New Richmond five times and threatened to arrest him Sergener said Curtis produced a revolver as he left his car and he fired through the door glass with a .22 rifle from behind the door Curtis was taken to a hospital by the Life Squad

Thriftway acquires Day Heights IGA in Milford area

Thriftway Markets has bought the Day Heights IGA Food Market at 902 Vera Cruz Pike adding a new grocer to Milford Day Heights. Dick Vaughn, ex Forestville Thriftway manager, will run the store after reorganizing and restocking this week. Other Clermont County Thriftway locations include Mt. Carmel and Loveland.

Strike Delays Ohio Highway Projects Worth Millions

Ohio operating engineers strike delays state and local contracts totaling at least 312 million dollars with Clermont County alone facing 3.1 million in projects. The Ohio Contractors Association calls for a 1.70 dollar hourly raise over four years, while stating the higher demand is unfair and will be paid by taxpayers as projects slip into next year.

Camp Allyn Opens 46th Season for Wheelchair Kids

Camp Allyn in Clermont County opens its 46th season for handicapped children on June 26. Operated by the Cincinnati Rotary Club, the camp serves three two week sessions for eight to fourteen year olds. A registered nurse is on duty at all times and doctors are on call. A heated pool allows supervised swimming for campers in wheelchairs.
