An immense meteor appeared near noon Friday, viewed across Southern Ohio and West Virginia. Witnesses in Hillsboro report a large white fireball with a trailing tail, followed by a loud crash. Fragments reportedly landed at Hobbs farm near Peebles and at Thomas farm near Bentonville, remaining red hot for hours.
The Department of the Interior issued a circular noting widespread laxity in pension voucher execution. It cites post dating false certifications and stock witnesses as abuses. The bureau warns of criminal proceedings against violators and urges strict adherence to voucher instructions. H. Clay Evans signs as Commissioner.

Delegates heard Jubilee Trumpet Blasts, reports from vice presidents, and papers on devotion, revival, social work, and charity. The event closed with prayers, readings, and a resolution to invite Rev Carte back. next session set for Georgetown.
J. R. Anderson, ex postmaster of Loveland, lost cash and papers when a masked burglar entered his sleeping room last week. The thief seized $15 from the trousers over the chair and escaped barefoot while Anderson watched, unable to pursue until dressed. The assailant’s small feet aided the quick getaway.
A private Tampa report describes rioting between North and South troops and between colored and white regiments. Four colored regulars died, several wounded. martial law cleared streets and provost guards deployed. Fort Brooke wrecked. owners seek government damages.
The programme for the seventh annual commencement of Clermont county common schools lists exercises at City Hall on Saturday at 2 PM. It includes motto reading, quartette Spring Time, invocations, vocal solos, the superintendent’s address by R. T. Dial, diploma presentations, and benediction. Names of township graduates and board of examiners are provided.
Gus Kautz, a Brown county farmer near Georgetown, fell from a barn while shingling last week. He struck his back, injuring the spine and remaining paralyzed below the waist. He is in a dangerous condition. He is related to Captain Fred Kautz of Higginsport, a noted officer in the 59th.
Fifteen farmers mobbed a neighbor they deemed objectionable battering doors and property, dragging him across fields, beating and binding him. The man fired at least two shots during the melee. The sheriff arrived and arrested five rioters, with names of others obtained. if Jacobs receives justice, the mob may face heavy damages.
The Clermont County Christian Endeavor Union will hold its ninth annual convention at Edenton on August 5, 1898. All are invited, especially Clermont county Endeavorers, with all day and evening sessions. Delegates from distance will be entertained, baskets encouraged, and good speakers and music anticipated. Miss Cora B. Hall, secretary of Union, Monterey, Ohio, may be contacted for information.
On Saturday evening June 25 the Portsmouth military band visits Batavia for a concert in the courthouse yard. The band is noted statewide with four top soloists among its members. Refreshments will be served by waiters, and admission is ten cents to help Batavia boys cover entertainment expenses. Good seats will be provided and all are invited.
In the William Weaver versus Dora B Weaver partition, Sheriff Buvinger sold the first tract of 95 acres at 28.25 per acre to John Bahay, George Bahay, and William Halbisch and the third tract of 36 acres at 6.67 per acre to Charles Schubert. The total purchase money is just over 2900 with about 600 in fees. 2300 will go to six heirs or descendants. The second tract is not described here.
The June session lasted three days as commissioners approved numerous bills, set the 1898 tax levy, awarded contracts, and handled road and right of way actions. They fixed pay for sheep killings by dogs, outlined road alterations, and awarded bridge and coal contracts.

John Hewes of Milford fell forty feet while painting around a chimney and broke his collar bone dislocated his thigh and suffered severe bruising. Doctors doubt his full recovery. He is the son of Assessor Hoewes and regarded as a worthy and industrious young man.
From a Denver memory a man named Charlie leaves home at eight with bat and cane. His wife warns him to remember the Maine and not stay out late. He returns by ten, fearing the scolding and a possible blast from his wife for staying late.
Mansfield Endeavors announce a state Christian Endeavor convention in Mansfield on June 29 and 30. President Bamberger and Rev J W Chapman D D and other noted speakers will address the gathering. Railroads grant round trip fare and boarding rates at about one dollar per day for Endeavorers, with an expected attendance of up to two thousand.
Sunday last the Knights of Pythias held church services at Presbyterian faith with a sermon by Dr. Billman. In the evening they marched to the cemetery and decorated graves of Leonard Moore Clifford Moore Norman Moore Oliver Marshall Archibald Tatman and George Zurmuble with an impressive ceremony as twenty four headlines stood in line.
