The M. E. Sunday school gathering at Bethel drew record attendance with ideal weather. Teachers and pupils engaged in a full two day program featuring sermons, papers on home department work, literature, and kindergarten methods, with officers elected for next year and Williamsburg chosen for the 1898 meeting.

First Soldier of the Present War Buried in Ohio Soil

Ensign Joseph R. Campbell of the Katahdin was buried in West Union village cemetery after a large gathering of townspeople and veterans. He died at twenty six after ten years of service, born in West Union on March 12, 1872, son of Dr. John Campbell. His grandfather Col J R Cockrill organized the seventieth O V I, and journalist Col John A Cockerill was an uncle. cousin J A C Stewart drowned off Africa two years prior.

June Commission Session Tackles Bridges and Sheep Claims

Engineer Horace Palmer among Klondike shipwreck victims

Horace Palmer, a Leba non resident and expert engineer aged 35, disappeared with the steamer May Jane Gray after sailing from Seattle toward the Klondike on the 19th ultimo. He leaves a wife and two children and was noted as a fine athlete and swimmer.

County G A R executive committee meets in Batavia

The executive committee of the county encampment G A R met in the Batavia post rooms last Saturday and appointed committees on programme printing privileges and music. The encampment will be held Thursday and Friday August 4 and 5 at the Baulum fairground. A fine time is anticipated.

Serious Charges Against a Highland County Teacher

The West Union Defender reports charges were filed against Charles Newton, a Highland County school teacher, for attempting to rape two young female pupils. A board hearing found the charges not sustained but deemed conduct unbecoming. next Saturday is set for him to vindicate himself or have his certificate revoked.

Death notices for Mrs Amanda Hulick and Mrs Kartmetz

Mrs Amanda Hulick wife of Erastus Hulick died this morning at her home near the Forestville schoolhouse aged about years. She leaves a husband five children and a bright home to be shadowed by her loss. Funeral services will be held at the family residence with interment in Fellows cemetery. Mrs Kartmetz an elderly Mt Holly resident and sister of Christian Jenike died at her home in Mt Holly last night.
