Spurred by floods, Batavia grower wades to deliver tomato plants

For about 15 years George Reither has sold torfato and celery plants from a Bear Creek farm off the A and P Highway. After heavy rains the creek was too deep for vehicles, so he waded across to meet customers and deliver orders, showing dedication beyond the beaten path. He once walked three miles to the post office to mail plants. He also engages in local politics.

County Farm Tour Invites Clermont Farmers to Annual Visit

County Agent invites farm residents to the annual tour at the Agricultural Experiment Farm near Owensville. The event showcases new developments, experimental plots, and past fertilizer lime seed results. The 1947 tour starts at 1 30 p.m. June 20 conducted by Dr. D R Dodd from Ohio State University.

Work on three new Batavia apartments on Main Street advances toward completion. Builder Tom Pancher remodels the second floor at an estimated cost of 8000 to 10000 dollars, with units to be ready for occupancy between the 15th and the first of next month. The former Bata via store storeroom on the first floor is being prepared for use, with the business type to be announced.

Navy veteran drowns after rescuing girl near Williamsburg

Howard Pierce a 20 year old Navy veteran of Williamsburg drowned while rescuing Annabelle Fairy 16 who fell into rain swollen East Fork near a waterworks dam. Fairy swam to safety as Pierce disappeared in a whirlpool. Pierce left a widow and his mother with four siblings. He worked at Williamsburg Furniture Factory.

New Auxier Store Opens Saturday in Batavia

On June 14, William Auxier will open a new appliance and electric store on Main Street Batavia moving from Water Street. Garland Auxier, former Clermont County sheriff, plans to move his Chevrolet showroom to the Main Water corner. William, an Army veteran, started the appliance business about 18 months ago. A complete line of appliances heating equipment and paints will be carried. Mrs Ted Ham Mrs Marvin Sprague and Mrs Paul Friend attended the Ohio Home Demonstration Council meeting at Ohio State University.

Milford Voters Consider Toll Free City Phone Rates

Village officials and local businessmen advocate acceptance of toll free city service rates offered next month by Cincinnati and Suburban Bell Telephone Co. Rates would be granted within Milford if 51 percent of subscribers approve. The plan likely extends beyond village limits with a mileage surcharge.

Town Hall to Be Sold in Ba tavia Council Plan

In a special Ba tavia Council session plans for a disposal plant and sanitary sewer system were reviewed after approval from the State Board of Health. The council approved signing up North Street and Broadway property owners for storm sewers to be installed with the sanitary system to avoid multiple street openings. The old Town Hall on Main Street will be sold under the current lease with the theater, with 70 feet reserved for a future Town Hall site.

Three Sentenced in County Court

Three persons pleaded guilty before Judge Harry Britton in Common Pleas Court for grand jury charges and were sentenced. Edgar Barnes drew 1 to 10 years for arson for burning a tenant house on Elklick Road in March. Eu nice Reese got 3 years but was placed on probation. Harold Ellis received 200 dollars and six months in jail for assault and 500 dollars and 30 days for resisting an officer.

Two Local Suicides Reported in Clermont County

Two residents died in separate self inflicted incidents in Clermont County. Marie Andres Malott 40 of Olive Branch died in a closed garage with a running car motor. Oliver L Banks 76 of Summerside used a shotgun. Sheriff Dericks investigated both cases noting ill health in both subjects.

County Veterans Republican Club Receives Charter in Batavia

At the Armory in Batavia the War Veterans Republican Club received its charter at the second meeting. Ned Crockett of Columbus state president presented it and urged staying in touch with Clermont County. Ralph Wolf of Columbus spoke on activities as membership grows. 79 active Republicans served as permanent officers: Tom Pierson president Harold J. Simmons recording secretary James M. Griffith membership secretary.
