Roberts Seizes Largest Clermont Moonshine Still on Record

Sheriff Robert Roberts and deputies captured a major moonshine operation in Goshen township. The Schooley farm plant housed a 300 gallon still with 63 barrels of mash and hundreds of pounds of sugar. Owner Jas Goetz of Reading and operators Gus Lewis and Raymond Haning pleaded guilty and faced fines of 900 and 650 dollars respectively plus costs. all jailed pending payment.

Batavia Woman Dies After Surgical Operation

Mrs. Roland Stepp of Batavia died after a surgical operation in Cincinnati last week. She endured long illness and passed away Thursday. Funeral held Friday at M E Church with Eastern Star service. Burial in West Virginia. She left a husband and one son.

Speaker Secured for Williamsburg 4th of July Program

Williamsburg Post No 288 American Legion has secured National Vice Commander Milton D Campbell of Cincinnati to speak at Town Park at 10 20 a m during the July 4 celebration. The Williamsburg School Band will perform all day and evening under a capable band master. A full program with premiums and special prizes will be issued June 15. Committee.

New Precincts Planned by Clermont County Board

Clermont County Election Board will meet June 20 at 9 a.m. to establish a new Miami township Mulberry precinct and add Milford New Richmond precincts. Moscow West Washington Neville East Washington Chile Rural Franklin precincts will be consolidated. Hearing for interested parties to review lines and boundaries.

Clermont Grand Jury to Hear First Degree Murder Case

Clermont county grand jury reports for duty Thursday with several cases to be considered. The first degree murder case of Frank Dugan for the stabbing death of Ernest Johnson at Neville last week will be heard, Prosecuting Attorney Forrest Bly in charge.

Clermont County Federation of Women's Clubs Meets in Amelia

The thirtieth annual meeting of the Clermont County Federation of Women's Clubs was held Thursday June 5 at the M E Church in Amelia with Amelia Woman's Club as hostess. Over a hundred members from eight clubs attended sessions with reports presented and programs including readings songs and a Gogal play reflecting club work and community efforts. The next meeting will be with the Fortnightly Club of New Richmond with officers named for the coming two years.

Newport News man arraigned for first degree murder

Frank Dugan of Newport News Virginia was arraigned on a charge of first degree murder for stabbing Ernest Johnson of Akron four times Sunday morning. Johnson died Friday at Bethesda Hospital after battle to life. Dugan, an employee of the C and O railroad, had been jailed at Batavia awaiting the outcome. The incident followed drinking and an insulting remark during a river ride. Clermont County records note rising murder cases and crowded jail conditions. Dugan reportedly has prior trouble. The county jail is described as overflowing with prisoners and limited sleeping space.

The Batavia Garden Club will hold a picnic June 16 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Peterson south of Batavia. A committee will prepare lunch to be served at noon. Members will be assessed 35 cents each.

Prohibition raids in Loveland result in multiple arrests

Last week Loveland saw raids on liquor dealers with three arrests after purchases of moist goods. Allen Woods and Rube Brown pled guilty and each fined 300 dollars. Wayne Templin fined 150 dollars and partially paid. Brown paid and was released. Woods remains jailed. Warren County raids yield several convictions. Sheriff Roberts reports success in seizing stills and goods. Four arrests totaled 2850 dollars.

The Fair at Owensville in August advances with new electrical wiring concessions and amusements secured for daily attractions. Concessions are selling and prospective vendors should contact secretary John B. Rapp in Batavia, Ohio. This event celebrates Clermont county's homecoming.

Scouts from Indiana Visit Grant Birthplace Tour

A party of 95 Boy and Girl Scouts from Indiana arrived Monday night en route to General Grant's birthplace at Point Pleasant. They stayed at the Presbyterian church grounds, ate with the Ladies' Aid, and planned to tour Kentucky by auto. Leader Abbott led the group with Rev. Edgar Moore in charge. parents joined them for the trip.

The Y P D rally gathered 140 youths from across the county at Roudebush's camp near Batavia last Friday night. Talks focused on camp life as the Clermont Geneva Training Camp opens July 21 for a 12 day outing with high hopes for a banner year and full readiness.

Boulware Raised to Regular Assistant Resident Engineer

William L. Boulware of Hillsboro, previously acting assistant resident engineer for Highland county, is appointed regular assistant Resident Engineer by the State Highway Department after graduating from the University of Arkansas College of Engineering. He is a grandson of Lester Boulware of Williamsburg. The Blanchester D A R held a memorial for two unknown soldiers of Anthony Wayne's Legion buried near Slab Camp in 1793. A 4000 pound granite monument unveiled June 1 marks the graves as part of Ohio unknown soldiers efforts.
