Four-Alarm Fire Causes $25,000 Loss in Batavia
Firefighters from Batavia and four neighboring towns battled a two hour blaze starting in Cler mont Tire and Supply recapping shop and spreading to Henning Trucking, damaging a garage and threatening a residence at 90 South Market Street. Loss totaled about $25,000 with $12,000 in shop contents and $10,000 in the Henning building. Police and sheriffs aided traffic control as power was knocked out and a radio transmitter failed. Fire cause under investigation by the State Fire Marshal.
