A community basket dinner will be held at Maple Grove M E Church next Sunday for neighbors to meet and mingle. Preaching is scheduled for 3 p.m. on June 6 to encourage attendance and fellowship.
East Fork Progressive Farm Woman's club met May 22 at Ida Daugherty's home with Mrs. Cecil Glancy presiding pro tem. The program covered Mother's Day origins, patriots’ greetings, duets, a reading, and a Battle Hymn performance followed by lunch. Next meeting with Mrs. Jones in June. Deerfield Farm club met May 20 at Mrs. John McAfee's home with songs, notes on house cleaning, readings, and a memory piece by Mrs. James Glancy. Welcome new member Mrs. Ora Ferree. visitors included Mrs. Pindle, Gladys Pindle, and others. miscellaneous shower given. Felicity board re-employed several high school staff, with grade teachers to be decided next meeting.
The State Farmers Institutes will be cut short this year with only one in five to be held, a reduction from last year. State headquarters have reduced the schedule, but independent sessions may still take place. These meetings are very profitable to those involved.
The home of Mrs. J. G. Dennis in Williamsburg hosted a Birthday Club gathering last Thursday evening to celebrate three members birthdays. An elegant two course luncheon was served.
Ralph Hulick Titus, born November 2, 1898 near Batavia Ohio, died May 17 1920 in Cincinnati aged 26. A Batavia graduate, he studied at Ohio State and Kansas, served as Sergeant and Second Lieutenant in WWI, drilling recruits at Camp Custer, and received the Colonel's praise. He married Elverta Wood on November 9 1918, returned home to Batavia after service, and died after a long illness likely contracted during the war. He was a charter member of Frank W Weaver Post 287 American Legion and was remembered for his faith, patriotism, and devotion.
We sincerely thank relatives neighbors and friends for their sympathy in our sorrow and bereavement following the loss of Ralph Loven. The family expresses gratitude for kindness and support during this difficult time.
Bids opened in Columbus for state pikes awarded to Laub & Billiter for the Bethel to Brown County line section at 149 629 75 and to Van Camp Bros for Amelia to Hamilton County line at 70 806 86. The Batavia Boy Scouts depart early next week for their annual camping trip near Fort Ancient under Scout Master J L Ander son with patrol leaders Russel Speidel and James Bradley. The article notes the Boy Scouts of America since its founding has built character and citizenship, counting one million two hundred thousand boys trained and fourteen thousand unpaid scoutmasters contributing 72 nights annually, plus eighteen thousand unpaid assistant scoutmasters. The obituary honors Dr Isaac Bearon Redrow born March 1 1840 near Cincinnati. He served in the Civil War from 1861, studied at Ohio Wesleyan and Miami Medical College, practiced medicine in Williamsburg from 1868, and died after a long illness at age 80. He married thrice and left two children and four grandchildren. He was active in church Masonic lodge and Grand Army. Card of Thanks notes gratitude for sympathy during illness.
In Batavia last Sunday Decoration Day drew about 2000 people. A parade formed at the armory with the Batavia band, Civil War comrades, soldiers, scouts, children, and flower girls. Graves were decorated by the little ones as Rev Ikey spoke, and many attendees planned to return next year.
Dealers in cigarettes should get busy, either get out of business or come in and take out the license required by law. The penalty is heavy for operating without a license. Since the new law took effect several have ceased handling cigarettes. A word to the wise is sufficient.
Private parties may not remove gravel stone or other building material along the interurban road bed on the Ohio pike as the property of the Pike contractors Laub Billet Connell and VanCamp Bros under the recently awarded contract. Work starts next week with employment for men and teams.
The Batavia council has obtained three truckloads of crusted stone to repair streets. The material will be hauled, dumped in piles, spread, and rolled to fill holes, improving travel comfort for residents and travelers.
Mrs Elizabeth Uselman aged about 76 died at her daughter Mrs George Cossene home in Chile on Monday May 24. Widow of the late St WR Uselman she was born Walker and lived with her husband for years in Augusta. Six sons and two daughters survive. Funeral services were held last Wednesday morning.
The N. and W. Railroad issues a new timetable for passenger trains with train 86, the evening run to Portsmouth from Cincinnati, departing 66 minutes earlier and arriving 60 minutes ahead of the regular time. Other trains show minor changes.
Deputy Wardens Clyde R and John R Shrofe report a busy week enforcing fishing laws in Highland County. They made several arrests for illegal nets and seines used to trap fish, noting Clermont has seen few such arrests in recent years.
Electric current for light and power along the Swing traction line will be furnished by the C G P Company. Feed wire runs from Highland Park power house to Swing line at Haworths. The Owensville Council owns pole line and will supply current to existing and new patrons. Workmen set poles and string wires to Haworths.
Former Batavia superintendent J E Collins, now in Lima, has been rehired for five years at a salary of 5000 dollars. The Lima News praises his leadership saying he has elevated Lima’s schools, standardized texts to allow reuse, and reduced unnecessary expenses, noting he previously raised Batavia Schools to a high standard.
Gen Sherwood outlines features of the new pension bill passed by Congress. It provides $50 to Mexican War veterans with 60 days service and honorable discharge, $80 to widows of those veterans, $50 to Civil War veterans with 90 days service or disability discharge, $72 for those needing regular aid, and $30 to widows married before 1905. Automatic increases apply to some beneficiaries. others must apply for aid.
Some tobacco has been set in this section from one half to two acres by a farmer due to ground scarcity. Plants are large in many cases while other sections report small plants. Corn planting is progressing nicely with many farmers finishing last weekend. Much land was replanted.
A large Masonic dance last Friday night at the Batavia Loose Leaf Tobacco Warehouse drew over 700 attendees. Jazz music filled the spacious floor as chairs lined the sides, refreshments sold out, and 100 plus cars lined the pike from various parts of the county, including visitors from Cincinnati and Kentucky.
Candidates seeking nomination in the August primary must file 60 days before August 10. Petitions require five voter signatures and candidate certification. Prospective candidates must deposit half of one percent of the office's annual salary with the election clerk to defray election expenses.
Boards facing a three bill or less levy must pass resolutions and file with the election board by June 10 to vote August 10. State aid depends on timely action as teacher wages rise, requiring more funds for future school operations.
