A 1886 article warns of the jigger or sand flea invading the United States. It details how the parasite burrows into warm blooded hosts and how stock laws unintentionally aid its spread. Prevention through aromatic washes, sulfur blends, and other treatments is urged, with emphasis on hygiene in poultry yards.
In Batavia Jas Dial’s business window two half grown rats amused passers by last week by catching flies and eating them. The display began with a sill full of black legs and ended with nothing left to tell the tale as the rats hopped and rapped on the glass.
Rev. Louis Evers was in a severe car accident on the road near Stonelick and Batavia churches while returning from Batavia. His vehicle left the roadway, overturned, and he crawled free before Sheriff Swing transported him to Batavia and then to Good Samaritan hospital in Cincinnati for treatment.
Dr H T Behymer and his wife of Owensville were riding up Perkins hill Tuesday when the clutch failed and after braking the auto left the road. It overturned three times and landed on the railroad track, seriously injuring the doctor while the wife was unhurt. The Amelia Baptist church will hold a social in the church yard Sunday July 1st with ice cream and cake. Major Percy Ashburn is home briefly.
The Clermont County Loose Leaf Tobacco Company stockholders met in Batavia to organize and elect officers. E. W. Patchell was chosen president with Hugh J. King as secretary and Sidney Davidson treasurer. A site for buildings near railroads and roads was proposed, with Oliver Wolf, Clifford Weaver, and Charles K. Ansteatt to select a construction site. Stockholders from across the county attended, and promoter Charles A. Davis departed for Milwaukee. The venture aims to ease tobacco trade for local growers and buyers, with an ideal brick-yard site near rail lines. Next week will publish further details.
The Boston fair runs August 19 to 22 with amusements and exhibits promised. Officers include President James B. McKeever of Williamsburg and Secretary John B. Rapp of Owensville, plus a slate of directors from Milford, New Richmond, Batavia, Bethel, Owensville, Amelia, Williamsburg, Newtonsville, and Goshen. Grange exhibits will be a major draw.
Mrs. Neva Ogden hosted the Hast Fork Progressive Farm Woman's Club in Norwood at her mother Mrs. Hattie Glancy home. The program included songs The Star Spangled Banner and Always Singing of His Love, a reading, topics on farm women and fairness, a question box, and a luncheon with ice cream cake and lemonade. The meeting closed with a Garfield quote.
The Knights of Taber secret order was instituted in Batavia at the EB D Scott Temple last Sunday. Fourteen colored candidates were initiated through the rites. Two deputies and one grand officer assisted. The group meets twice monthly and attracted visitors from the city.
Miss Juanita Jackson hosted about 100 youngsters from here and Walnut Hills at the Dennison ball near the First National Bank. A truck load of 60 and several machine loads arrived from afar. Refreshments included vodka? flavored fare and ice cream. Dancing and conversation lasted late. The hall was newly decorated for a secret order among colored people.
Farmers in many areas crave rain after a dry spell harming corn and tobacco crops. Corn is sprouting while tobacco is firing and topping begins this week. Brown County Day at the Zoo is set for August 9. The Clermont outing date remains uncertain.
The county auditor reports state authorities have credited Clermont county with 800000 for the proposed pike project. Funds will be furnished once county estimates are provided and two fifths raised to offset three fifths. State end secured. bonds to be advertised and contracts awarded once estimates arrive.
Voters in several school districts will decide on an extra two mill tax levy beyond limits for school funding on August 12. Polls open at usual voting places with regular election officials. Districts requesting the election include Bethel Loveland Newtonsville Amelia Ohio Township and Williamsville Special Petitions must be filed ten days before election.
Charles Smith Griffis born December 98 1881 in Titusville Pennsylvania died July 21 1919 aged 87 years 7 months 21 days. He spent most of life in Batavia with a wagon maker trade and married Rebecca Danberry June 29 1856. Survived by four children a wife and sisters he faced years of invalidity with cheerful patience and deeply valued grandchildren and great grandchildren.
James Brower Jr of Batavia was riding in a car owned by Doll, an Amelia employee, when he drove off during a party at Dennison corner. The car struck a railing near Norris boarding house, plunging 15 feet to the water edge and injuring Brower, who was treated by Dr Vin Horn. The vehicle, valued at 876 dollars, suffered major damage as garage workers towed it in for repairs.
Clermont County farmers are urged to consider Portage wheat, tested locally for years with satisfactory yields and good quality. The Clermont County Experiment Farm sold bulk seed at a reasonable price as a Cincinnati seed house plans to buy the entire crop by August 1 unless local demand arises. Farmers are advised to call the Experiment Farm for price and details.
The Clermont County Teacher's Institute opens September 1 5 in New Richmond with Flank B Dyer and other instructors. Lectures cover apple growing farming thrift and teacher tenets with daily speakers and evening entertainments. Officials include Supt F B Bishop and Miss Helen Kennedy.
Sunday at 1 45 the Batavik fire bell warned of a blaze in town. Firemen found the bank building sheeting burning with smoke at the edge. Gutter removal exposed years of sparrow nests ignited by heat. Fire extinguishers quickly doused the flames. Damage described as light. a Dennison building witness noted the incident.
Bud Foster, night operator for the N W railroad, traveled to Piketon to attend the funeral of his brother who was killed at Neville Island near Pittsburg Pa. A painter, the man was working alone when several steel rails fell on him, and he was found dead hours later. He was 85, single, and well regarded by his company and friends.
Ada Retta Strimple born November 27, 1862 on a farm near Wilhameville Ohio died July 13, 1919 at 1 pm after eight years of illness. She married John W. Strimple November 27, 1889 and lived much of her life in Columbus, Ohio. Survived by husband daughter Thelma Grubs of Columbus and siblings. Funeral held July 15 at the Withamsville M B church. interment Mount Moriah cemetery. pallbearers from Columbus Owls Club represented by local families.
Country Club No. 50 held a social evening at the Cribbett residence with families, ice cream and cake, and a relaxed literary program. About 80 attendees praised the hosts for a standout gathering and a memorable night.
Local merchants warned of tight sugar supplies as canning season nears but newspapers report ample stock. The U S Department of Agriculture projects a domestic sugar crop of 2 216 000 000 pounds, about 147 000 000 more than the previous six year average, urging action to meet demand.
Farmers and supporters push back against unauthorized blackberry pickers trespassing on their land. They describe efforts to access berries before daylight, with some charging a dollar a day for entry and a truckload paying twenty dollars for a full day. Prices cited include high quality berries at about 1244 cents per quart and apples at 8.76 per box.
Dry weather and intense sun hurt the remaining blackberries, drying those in sun while shaded berries ripen quickly. Many berries have already been picked and stored for winter.
