Ada Gelvin of Cincinnati has been informed she inherits part of her uncle's estate in Colorado. He, a prominent landowner with extensive personal property, died last November and the estate is now being closed.
A new company forms to drill for natural gas on the Milt Elliott farm three miles from Gosh en. A 680 foot well has supplied gas for home use for twenty years, and crews from Wooster Ohio plan a test with a shaft likely to reach 800 feet or more, hoping to pipe gas to nearby towns.
The Roude bush family holds its annual reunion at Wood lawn Park on Saturday August 9. All relatives and connections are invited to attend.
Clermont farmers are invited to visit the Farm Bureau tent at the county fair. The Clermont Experiment Farm and the Farm Bureau co operate in preparing an exhibit with W E Hanger of Columbus presenting wheat grading demonstrations. Prof Stover will answer wheat disease questions Thursday. The annual Clermont Fruit Growers automobile tour is set for Thursday September 4 with outside speakers anticipated. O T Wilson of the U S Department of Agriculture reports a new potato disease Wart and requests samples for identification. Soil fertility meetings continue with strong attendance and the planned schedule.
Over ten days state and national officials survey Lawrence County apple crops. Summer apples fetch 6 to 9 dollars per bushel locally while Cincinnati and Columbus offer up to 4 dollars for medium grade. High grade thrives at 6 dollars fob. Winter varieties like Rome Beauty and Stayman show strong prices. one grower already bids 7 dollars per barrel for Beauties at picking.
A Sunday school celebration will be held in Simmons Grove near Laurel on Saturday August 9. An excellent program and entertainment are arranged for a large crowd with abundant music and all are invited.
Lightning from last week's storm damaged several structures in and around Miami township. Ex-commissioner Joe Smith, Dr. Saunders, and Al Davis's new barn suffered losses, with the telephone company noting its usual share of damage.
Washington July 28 A bill introduced in the House proposes a monthly bonus of eighty dollars for each month of actual service in the war for more than two months plus a hundred dollars extra to each soldier sailor marine or nurse under actual fire.
A Saturday night reception for returning soldiers will be held at the Second M. E. church with music by the colored band and good speaking promised.
At a Monday meeting the Stonelick-Consolidated School Board employed several teachers led by Superintendent Howard Kellum. Assignments were announced for Rocky Fork Olive Branch Whitaker Greenbriar Summit Forest Hill and other sites. Elklick and Glancy remain unemployed. A resignation rule requires any teacher unwilling to accept a designated post to resign immediately.
The county board schedules its regular session for next Monday. It urges all teachers not yet employed to file applications with the county superintendent, outlining normal training and qualifications needed.
Anna D Fitch died July 17 at 206 North Central Avenue Eagle Rock California after a year long illness of heat trouble. She was born October 2 1855 in Troy Ohio and aged 68. Funeral services were held Saturday with interment Forest Lawn. Survived by husband Thomas D Fitch and two daughters one married to Dr Frank Moxon and another a missionary in Korea. Sister Mrs William Parker wife of Rev C C Herriott Oakland Cal. Fitch formerly a Batavian and well regarded locally.
Batavia Masons announce the annual picnic on August 16 at Highland Park with afternoon and evening events. Ample car service from the C. G. & P. railway and nearby Bata provide transportation, and a well prepared dance hall offers ample music and fellowship. Everyone is invited across the county and Cincinnati.
During an electrical storm the Barberton school near Belfast was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. No housing arrangements were announced yet, but students will likely be sent to another school until rebuilding is completed.

During a Thursday storm a lightning bolt struck a walnut tree on the late Henry Schobert’s property behind the Odd Fellows building. Windows broke and fuses blew in nearby homes, but no serious damage occurred as the family attended a German picnic. The fire alarm triggered briefly due to a mistaken fire rumor at Kramer bakery. The storm remained severe throughout.
