The Clermont County Board of Elections reports a growing list of candidates filing petitions for township and municipal offices for the fall election. Names and offices are listed, with petitions due by September 1 and a requirement to indicate term length and a 0.5 percent salary deposit.

East Fork Progressive Farm Women host East Hill Club

On July 15 the East Fork Progressive Farm Women’s club hosted the East Hill Club at Mrs. Frank Hutchinson’s home. The afternoon featured songs and readings by Bella Hunter Wilma Rowan Elizabeth Harlow Mabel Mulldy Ruth Hutchinson and others followed by duets sketches and contests. Guests enjoyed lawn games and a tasty luncheon before adjourning. Naomi Harlow of Cincinnati attended as a guest.

Homecoming at St Louis church a county fair success

The Homecoming and Celebration at Owensville County Fair Grounds Sunday drew Catholic church members and local crowds. Over 1400 dinners were served and the event was greatly enjoyed.

Carrier Jackson Retires After 35 Years of Service

Charles Jackson, rural route carrier from Batavia, retires July 31 after joining the service in 1987. He treated the office staff to dinner Friday and received a token from Postmaster Coyle as a token of appreciation amid a greatly enjoyed evening.

County Commissioners Meet Approve Bills and Estimates

Clermont County commissioners convened in Batavia on July 26 with all members present. They approved numerous bills totaling general, gas tax, and animal claims and ordered the auditor to issue warrants. A bridge repair estimate was set for August 2, and desk trade for John McKeever was approved. Batavia Building and Loan Co. semi annual dividend of 3 percent was declared.

New 15000 Dollar Filling Station at Bethel

A new garage and filling station costing about 15000 dollars is planned on the Daniel Carter homestead site in Bethel. The Carter home, a red brick building over a century old, was razed and foundation trenches are near completion. Bob Buckler, Bethel dealer, builds the station financed by Eureka Oil Co of Cincinnati. J B Bodley of Loveland holds the contract. Bethel Theatre work is also his. No completion date announced.

Williamsburg Rebekah Lodge 208 marks 50th anniversary

The Williamsburg Rebekah Lodge No. 208 celebrated its 50th anniversary on Friday evening July 23 with about 200 attendees from Bethel and surrounding towns. Charter members J. C. Fuhr and Charles Hoffman attended, along with Mrs. Katie Ellis, recognized as the first member taken in. Activities included talks by charter members and James M. Fitzpatrick, past grand master of the I O O F, a lodge history by Alice Smith, songs, recitations, tap, duets, and a string quartet from near Sardinia. Refreshments of ice cream and cake were served.

Town Hall rest rooms installed

Town Hall undergoes restroom upgrade with two upstairs facilities for patrons and one in the basement. Sewer connections are complete and work should finish in a few weeks. The improvement follows a decade of state advocacy and earlier calls dating to Mayor J. L Larkin’s administration.

Machine with failed brakes crashes in Cincinnati causing scene

A big sedan owned by Mrs. Mabel Massey ran wild after brake failure in Cincinnati. It careened across Nassau Street nearly hit cars, jumped a curb on Luray Avenue and crashed into a tree. Police found Louise Mussey's driving license in the wreck, and Mrs. Mussey was unaware of the incident until notified.

Fever Patient Is Recovering after Rocky Mountain Fever Case

Junor Lally, 4, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lally of Batavia, was treated at General Hospital Cincinnati after the only Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever case in Clermont County. Dr. Mastropaolo said his temperature is normal and he should be home soon. He noted high fatality in the Missoula River area but low elsewhere. Clermont County residents have nothing to fear.

Dairy Herd Assn Picnic Set at Lake Allyn August 7

Clermont Hamilton Dairy Herd Improvement Association members will picnic at Lake Allyn west of Batavia on Saturday August 7. Ohio State University dairy specialist Mrs Charles Blackman will discuss What Farmers May Expect from a Dairy Herd Improvement Association. Thirteen Clermont County dairymen are affiliated with the group formed last spring to improve herds through complete milk and butterfat production records.

Social Security Board Grants Ohio Unemployment Fund

The Social Security Board announced certification to the U S Treasury of an 80 678 grant to cover Ohio Unemployment Compensation Act administration July 5 to September 30. An unexpended balance of 102 414 remains at year end, totaling 133 092 available to the commission.

District Highway Patrol Substation Plan Abandoned

Col Lynn Black head of the State Highway Patrol announced last week that a planned patrol sub station on Route 125 in Brown Adams or Clermont County will be dropped for the coming year due to state budget cuts. The site near Georgetown would have been staffed by several of eighty new officers authorized by the legislature. The project is postponed indefinitely as patrol services face drastic reductions.

Grand Jury Sees 30 Witnesses in Week End Session

Clermont County Grand Jury examined thirty witnesses over Friday and Saturday hearings. Seven women and eight men served on the jury, which returned ten indictments and one no bill. Indictments include driving while intoxicated, assault with intent to kill, and non support, with details tying cases to Bethel, Loveland, Milford and New Richmond.
