Howard Swope, a World War II veteran from Felicity Franklin Township, died during a home furlough. The disordered clippings show Swope had just purchased Waterman drug store Felicity and planned remodeling before entering service.
Miss Alma Milby, Commercial High School teacher in Batavia for four years, resigned and accepted a teaching position at Carthage, Illinois, announced by Mr. J. M. Wiseman.
Raymond Reynolds, Dot food store manager, today bought the Albert Watson holdings in the village. The purchase includes three buildings and a building lot in the main business section. Reynolds plans remodeling and a new building on the vacant lot.
A seven and one half pound son Tomy teen oo week. Mother and baby both are re ported domne fine. Sgt. McGraw, who is stationed at Harlan, Tex., was home on furlough for the blessed event.
Mayor Joseph M. Barrere, ill three months, was taken to Bethesda Hospital Cincinnati after a second stroke at his son Thomas Barrere's home on Mound Street. His condition is listed as serious while Vice Mayor Clyde B. Dericks serves as acting mayor.
The annual election will be held at the Fair Grounds west gate on August 17 1945 from noon to 2 PM to elect one director for a three year term from Goshen Franklin Pierce Washington Batavia Stonelick townships. Any Clermont County resident age 21 with a membership ticket may vote. J W Evans secretary Clermont County Agricultural Soc.
Charles E Churchvillage 76 a farmer and bachelor died Friday. Requiem high mass was said Monday at 9 a m in St Louis Church Owensville. He was the last member of his immediate family and one of the oldest local families. A sister died last week in Cincinnati. Born in the area he spent his life here.
The Amelia Service Club sponsors a rummage sale on Saturday July 28 at Colonel's Store Room. Shoppers are urged to come with friends to find bargains offered at the event.
Mr and Mrs John Rapp of Bar-at-avia learned this week that their son John A Rapp has risen from Captain to Major after two years service in the South Pacific He has participated in major Pacific battles and is now stationed in the Philippines
The 13 year old Presbyterian Church in Scotch Settlement now Nicholsville marked its 113th year with a service led by Rev. Edwin B. Flory. The 1865 church building, financed in part by the Presbyterian Home Mission Board, faces liquidation of a $200 mortgage. a historical paper will be burned. Mrs. James Davis, active for 23 years, has moved to Mt. Washington but was honored, and former townsfolk with new farms joined the church.
Fette leads a countywide push during Farm Safety Week July 22 28 with Soil Conservation Service data from Region III noting 41 serious injuries and 30 deaths in a single week June 10 16 1945. Local incidents involve a ten year old girl at S J Hanna farm and Chas Aulen who fell from a ladder at Robert Caldwell’s Owensville turkey house.
Coast Guard troopship details veterans’ return to home ports as Pfc. Robert L. Brewsaugh drowns in the Ohio River during furlough. A nine member Ohio Commission on returning veterans is created to study needs through January 15, 1947, with potential World War I style service bonuses.
Anna and Chesley Jones sue Gilbert and Mildred Tavin in Common Pleas Court claiming the Tavins severed a village waterline crossing their property. The Joneses say the pipeline is the only source of water and seek a temporary restraining order, a mandatory injunction, and $500 in damages amid wartime water shortages.
Eldon L Kirkpatrick husband of Mrs. Eldon Kirkpatrick of Williams burg recently passed through a U S Air Force Reinforcement Depot in England en route to a rest in the states after seven months as a tail gunner with the Eighth Air Force. At the depot he was briefed on safeguarding vital information from his European war experience. Before his return he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters and three battle participation stars.
The Community Band of Batavia directed by Mr. P. F. Jamieson will perform its weekly concert Friday at 8 15 P M weather permitting.
The county with about 25 000 people expects surplus produce near 1 000 000 but lacks towns over a thousand inhabitants. It explains sugar in liberated areas does not count toward our supply, Spain’s 1945 allocation comes from world pool via Britain, Cuba’s sugar allocation remains minimal, and brewing uses only a tiny share of rationed sugar.
John Houser County Home Superintendent resigns after many years. Mrs. Houser serves as Matron with resignation effective March 1, 1946, per a letter to the County Commissioners.
St Louis Catholic Church of Owensville hosts annual Homecoming and Picnic at the fair grounds next Sunday from 11:30 A.M. to 7:30 P.M. A fried chicken dinner is planned for attendees and the afternoon features games programs and entertainment for all ages.
The Immaculate Heart of Mary church Forestville and St. Thomas More Withamsville host a Picnic and Summer Festival on Route 125 August 5. Rev Heider provided bear steaks from a Canada hunt, with chicken and roast beef also served. Games and entertainment planned. General chairman is John Holcamp with committee members from both parishes.
Mrs Emma Sipple Collier died Saturday July 21 near Batavia. Funeral services were held July 24 at Moore Funeral Home at 10:00 A M and she was buried at Georgetown Cemetery.
A Department of Taxation representative will be at the Court House on July 30 to assist vendors with their semi annual sales tax returns. The notice notes that cane and beet sugar for 1943 totaled 5 895 000 tons and that 1 100 tons is exactly one five thousandth of that total. Brewers use a corn derivative unrationed industrial sugar in beer production, not for home use.
Lt Gladys Jeannette Bauer and Lt Harry A Miller wed in Bride’s Chapel Santa Ana California in uniform with attendants Carl Miller and an aunt. Both are Navy officers stationed at Miramar San Diego. Miller is Bronze Star and Silver Star recipient for service in Guam New Georgia and Mariana Islands.
Bethel mayor announces homecoming events set for August 31 and September 1 with Mayor Luther Canter as part of the committee list. Officers include Gould White as chairman B N West as assistant chairman Catherine Mefford as secretary.
Mt Carmel 4 H Flying Needle Club met at Juanita Buescher home on July 17 at 2 PM with Norma Jean Pattison presiding. After project work the group enjoyed grilled wieners and root beer and played games. Next meeting set for July 24 at Merle Watkins home at 10 30 AM.
