Last Rites Held for Mrs. John Huntington in Batavia

Funeral services were held Monday at 2 PM from the Batavia Methodist Church for Mrs. John Huntington a civic and religious leader active in the Batavia Woman's Club Garden Club and Eastern Star past matron of local chapters She died Friday in a Cincinnati hospital after months of ill health and is survived by her husband two sisters two brothers and a stepmother of Cincinnati Bluefield and Toledo her Virginia birth and Ohio move in 1900 1910 and 1926 are noted as part of her life story.

Clermont delegates nominate county candidates at Batavia

A Clermont County Convention of Delegates met in Batavia on July 30 to nominate October election candidates. Simeon Goodwin of Franklin Township was named Representative, James McKin­nie of Stonelick for Commissioner, and Thomas Jefferson Morris of Tate for Recorder. The body resolved to give full support to the slate.

Ed Aultman Recovering to Testify in McWithey Case

Fifty years ago on July 31 1895 Ed Aultman who was badly cut by Theodore McWithey in a Elk Lick harvest field is recovering and will testify tomorrow. McWithey is free on $300 bail and faces a preliminary hearing the same day.

Ralph Jones Buys Dial Building For New Evening Business

Ralph Jones who runs a soft drink stand and billiard parlor in the Kline building on Main and Second streets has purchased the Dial building next to the Clermont Hotel. He plans repairs to establish a similar enterprise, calling the location a good one and an improvement to town.

Batavia 4-H Elects Secretary and Reporter at Meeting

The Batavia Needlepoints 4-H club met Friday July 27 at 7 30 P M in the County Agent's office. Ruth Ann Smith was elected Secretary and Betty Raye Ross named news reporter to fill vacancies. Discussion covered the Fair and plans for camp and small needle projects with member names.

Army Corporal James Robinson Home on 30 Day Furlough

Corporal James Robinson returns home to Amelia on a 30 day redeployment furlough after 11 months overseas including four months in Germany. He served with the 643rd Tank Destroyer Battalion near Berlin at war’s end and fought with the 82nd Airborne and 83rd Infantry, including Ardennes and the Rhine Elbe drive. He is to report to California for further service in the South Pacific after the furlough.

Clermont Scouts to Aid at County Fair in Owensville

Wallace H. Maw announces Clermont and Brown County Boy Scouts will assist at the Clermont County Fair in Owensville from August 14 to 17. They will manage parking and traffic, present a merit badge show, run first aid booths, and operate a camping tent with 15 units. Also noted is an August 5 camping trip for Newtonsville Troop 486 and Mulberry Troop 468 led by Edwin Van Camp and Ralph Blair.

Summerside M. E. Edges Holy Trinity In 10 Inning Thriller

Summerside M. E. won the third game Sunday from Holy Trinity in a 6 to 5 ten inning struggle. After two one run losses, Atwell closed the game with relief pitching. Bayer led Trinity with a single double and homer, while Robinson chipped in a double and triple for Summerside. Next game set for Sunday August 5 at 2:30 P M at Batavia School Grounds.

A serenade and shower were given in the community hall in Bellevue Kentucky for the marriage of Marine PFC Charles Utter and Miss Roberta Camery on July 23. Utter, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Utter formerly of Moscow Ohio, is home on sick leave after losing an eye on Okinawa. Camery is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Camery, Chile business people.

Amelia Soldier Receives Outstanding Duty Citation

Clifford J. Bachelier of Amelia Ohio was cited for outstanding duty in Italy with the Fifth Army front. He served in the 3th Infantry Regiment of the Ninety first Powder River Division and his wife Betty Jane Bachelier lives on Route 1 Amelia.

New Presbyterian Pastor to Lead Clermont Church

The Pres byterian Church in Clermont will welcome Rev. Walter M. Zennah of Brownstown Ind as resident pastor starting Sept 1 after three years without one. Zennah a Southerner educated in Athens College and Perkins Theological School has served with the North Carolina mountains board and Boy Scout work. The Clermont Soil Conservation District held its regular board meeting on Friday July 27 with members Norris Kistner Caldwell and Schafer present. The board voted to return a large tractor rotary scraper to the Soil Conservation Service and reported completed ponds on several farms with preliminary surveys for drainage and farm planning underway.

New Ration Books to Be Issued in December

Clermont residents will receive War Ration Book No 5 between December 3 and 15 through public schools, to be used from January 1 for 10 to 15 months. The issuance coincides with Gasoline Books and Coupon No 18 going into effect, with teachers aiding the process and a small extra sugar allotment for some households.

Clermont Man Passes Bar Examination

Edmund J. Hadley of Monterey passed the State Bar Exam in Cincinnati with a score of 82.4 in a class of 13 from Hamilton County. Chief Justice Weygand swore in the group at the Court House. Hadley has 20 years with Cincinnati Gas and Electric and is a noted Guernsey breeder in Clermont County.

The Peace Mascots 4 H club met at Larry Neil’s home on Wednesday July 25 with 18 members and two visitors Mrs J Neil and Mrs R Durbin present. Vice president Jerry Taylor led the pledge and demonstrations on Selecting Vegetables Removing Stains and Seeing Eye Dogs were given by Taylor Cuthbertson and Delores Durbin. After discussing old and new business the meeting adjourned and a birthday cake was served for Thelma Popp.
