The message describes widespread crop stress from intense heat and drought. Hay, wheat, oats, tobacco, potatoes, and garden produce suffer, with many crops two-thirds short or unrecoverable. Fruit and corn yields are poor, tomatoes refuse to set, and overall the summer harvest faces near failure.
Burglars entered E. W. Howe’s department store in Chile last Thursday night, taking about 800 dollars of goods including shoes clothing and hats. Entry was through the front door with the lock damaged. police found the shop in a mess Friday morning and left shoes on the counter. No clue was found and the post office nearby was untouched. Deputy Brooks investigated after two empty gas cans suggested a hurried exit.
Bathers are asked to stop swimming in the Longhole near the railroad bridge where Batavia’s water intake is located. Long drought and road work have lowered and polluted the supply, burdening the water works to purify it for public use and health protection.

The 18th annual Home Coming of the New Harmony Community will be held on church grounds Sunday evening July 20. Rev Ludwick and Martin L Davies will be the speakers.
Republicans of the Sixth District announce a Clarence J. Brown rally in Portsmouth Ohio under Scioto County Brown for Governor Committee. The High School Auditorium hosts the 8:00 P M event with Cyrus P. Kahl as chairman. Invitations extend to Republicans in adjoining counties and other State and District candidates will be introduced. Motor caravans are being organized across districts to attend.
Batavia Ohio organizes a Bridge Dedication and Homecoming for August 4 1934 inviting Mayors Councils and citizens within 25 miles along Route 73 and 132 and nearby towns to attend and participate. The resolution directs distribution to listed cities and recording in village minutes.
Mrs William Donley of Williamsburg stepped barefoot on a ground blown high tension wire, struck by 2800 volts and died instantly. Coroner Dr O B Martin handled the case. The body was moved to Maham Funeral Home as officials and light department workers restored power amid recent local fire losses.
Major Isaac E. Titus, a Batavia native now stationed in El Paso with the Chemical Warfare Service since last September, is promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. He and Mrs. Titus, residing at Hotel, moved to El Paso from Edgewood Arsenal Maryland after assignments in Manila. Titus has been at William Beaumont Hospital for two months, with friends saluting his promotion and wishing a swift recovery.
The Hartwell farm barn near Amelia burned Sunday at 1 p.m. from suspected spontaneous combustion. Hay oats and wheat were stored inside with farm implements and equipment. livestock were in pasture. Amelia Fire Department could only save nearby buildings due to water scarcity. Small insurance payout. The Hartwells thank all who helped save their home.
The Newtonsville Farm Bureau held a Tuesday evening program on July 17 with music talks a play and the film Builders of an Empire. Participants included Anne Conley William Sander Betty Ansteatt Eugene Ansteatt Mary Janet Ansteatt Mildred Marshall Doris Jane Ogle Doris Marshall Faye Pringle Bert Haines Ralph Hill Betty Flischer Lounise Jordan Annabel Ansteatt Shirley Conover and E B Baugh County Agricultural Agent. The Locust Corner M E Church and Ohio and Pierce Farm Bureau units joined the event featuring an ice cream social and the film highlighting agriculture in U S history.
State Patrolman D. Stacel arrested W A Longfield of Cincinnati for operating a Mack truck with a Shack license and for no driver license. Longfield pled guilty before Squire Larkin, was fined 26 dollars plus costs for the license issue and 5 dollars plus costs for the license offense. A warning against license tag shifting and violations was issued.
Batavia duo Louis Fishback and Louis Wolf and Williamsburg resident Elburn Walker in Williamsburg earned success at the recent state pharmaceutical examination.
A cyclone and hailstorm Saturday night tore the steel and cement roof from the Pierce Township Centralized School, landing on nearby fields and damaging Edgar Eppert's house. The building cost about $3000 with $1000 loss and little insurance. Local promoters include E W Townsley and Bennett Behhymer. Behnmer and Nobis barns were damaged. the storm path stretched half a mile wide and a mile long.
The county approved various bills for labor, materials, and services totaling amounts to be paid. Roads receive regrading and resurfacing with tar and stone. oil purchased for road work and several crews listed for culvert repairs and labor.
This correction notes that last week's Commissioner's report misstated the item as Turner animal claim $508 and should have stated an estimate on the Laurel bridge. The correction clarifies the proper item and amount.
Amelia piled up 23 hits off Schuster for 48 total bases while Edenton rallied to win 7 to 6 over Mt Carmel. Williamsburg beat Nobis 12 to 7, Cincy Builders won 22 to 6 against Newtown, Newtonsville edged Tramps 9 to 8, Batavia had the bye. Elimination round schedule set for next Sunday. Williamsburg, Edenton, Builders and Batavia undefeated.
The Clermont County Fair Board announces new attractions this year. On Wednesday August 22 the Southern Ohio Coon Hunters Association will hold a hunt with over 200 top coon hounds from Ohio Indiana and Kentucky. The Quilt Show grows with higher premiums and the Old Time Fiddles and Orchestra contests will occur on Thursday. Pamona Grange displays attract visitors and the 4-H Clubs expect over 600 children with notable exhibits. Garden Clubs return and Williamsburg Future Farmers Shop exhibit presents 17 woodworking and appliance pieces.
The 13th annual picnic of F.W.W. drew 45 attendees from Union Plains Brookville Carthage Madeira Monterey Marathon Newtonsville Fayettesville and Augusta Ky. They enjoyed a noon dinner and afternoon games swimming and dancing and planned to meet again next year.
East Hill Farm Club entertained the Bethel club at the Community hall on July 19 with 56 members present. Led by Mrs. M. Binkley, program included songs America the Beautiful and America First, papers by Ethel Davidson and Alma Patterson, and readings by Mrs. Gladys Ashton and Mrs. Goff. The East Hill Club also presented a play and planned to meet August 2 with Mrs. Bushbacher.
