Midnight Shooting Affray Over Missing Whip
Arthur Ferguson a 19 year old colored man from Elk Lick shot James Smith a white man after a dispute over a 60 cent buggy whip. Ferguson fled but returned. Smith was wounded in the cheek and Ferguson was jailed on charges of shooting with intent to kill and carrying concealed weapons. He was bound over to the grand jury and released on bond.

Ohio wheat and crop prospects show little change
The Agricultural Commission reports wheat prospects near last month’s level with a state average of 102 percent about 1544 bushels per acre. Barley 90 percent, rye 95 percent, oats 70 percent, corn planted at 96 percent with 89 percent condition. Potatoes 95 percent planted, conditions about 71 percent, pastures poor due to drought in the southwest.
