High winds lash Clermont County centers of damage
Heavy thunderstorm swept central Clermont County late Monday into Tuesday causing thousands in damage. Southern Batavia and northwestern Pierce townships were hardest hit with winds to 80 mph, felling trees and damaging homes. A wall breach at Batavia Township and damage at Colonial Estates were noted. Emergency communications faltered for hours as lightning struck towers and power and phone lines failed across scattered areas. Meteorologists cited a downsburst as the likely cause, with Lunken Airport reporting three quarters of an inch of rain by 2 a.m.
