The European Betula alba grows larger than our tree, rarely exceeding 12 inches diameter and 40 feet tall. The Old Man of the Mountains in New Hampshire was found in 1805 by Whitcomb and Notch Brooks, described by Field in 1827, with a 36 to 40 foot chin to forehead vertical. The identity of the Man With the Iron Mask remains disputed among several historical candidates. A Washington Star note critiques exaggerated public speakers by comparing a circus poster to reliable signs.
