The Columbus convention adopted a Republican State Platform praising President Hoover and endorsing Prohibition. It calls for state economy, tax restraint, highway and education plans, farm relief, conservation, banking reform, and equal citizenship for African Americans. Charles H. Lewis named state campaign manager.
Clermont County farmers are selling a larger percentage of their livestock cooperatively than any other county in the state. Farm Bureau and Grange officials work together and expect a notable rise in cooperative livestock marketing. Cincinnati producers handled 368 more decks in the first six months of 1982 compared with 1931.
The Amelia Quilt Show last week showcased rare antique specimens and many new quilts, highlighting a strong contrast that sparked interest. The ladies in charge reported enjoyment from the event and proceeds replenished funds.
Dr. Falconer of Ohio State cites a ten year rise in average annual eggs per hen from 60 to 80. Census data show 1920 to 1980 increases in farm chickens and egg production, aided by modern methods, balanced rations, mash feeding, and specialized poultry farms. Culling unprofitable hens could further boost profits.
Mrs Katie Oetzel aged 53 widow of Mt Pisgah took her own life by hanging with a strap Saturday morning after leaving her brother-in-law Richard Oetzels home. The Rev W J Baker a retired Methodist minister aged 85 was found dead in his Amelia home Saturday morning. He had been blind for two years and retired twenty years ago after forty years of active service in the Hillsboro district. Survived by two sons and a daughter. Funeral from the home Tuesday at 1 30 with burial at Cherry Fork Adams county.
Members of the Batavia Garden Club met at Mrs. Joseph Homan's home on Monday afternoon. Speaker Mr. Cowperthwaite Sr. of Cherry Grove discussed Flower Shows and the club announced plans for a Flower Show on September 8.
The Old Company M reunion occurred last Sunday at Williamsburg Park with John McKever as master of ceremonies. A fine noon dinner followed, and talks were given as the Batavia Drum Corps led the march to the park. The group plans meeting in Georgetown next year led by Major Frank K. Frebis and C. O. Rice. Ballots from May's primary, ordered released due to a contested race, were set to be burned by order of the board, typically 80 days after the election.
The Batavia Presbyterian Deacons and Trustees attended a steak supper at U S Grant Park in Pt Pleasant hosted by Judge and Mrs H L Nichols. A July electrical storm struck the E B Stanley estate on Shawnee Run Road burning the large barn but saving many valuable animals.
The Red Cross receives a new car donated by Judge and Mrs. H. L. Nichols after the old vehicle logged over 50 000 miles with no repair costs. The Lewis Motor Co. exchanged the old car for the new one, aiding patient transport to hospitals at no charge.
Amelia and Williamsburg suffer third-round losses in the Clermont County championship. Bethel beats Amelia 11 to 1 with Griffith on fire. Williamsburg drops to US Shoe led by Ray Toole. Mount Carmel and Goshen post wins as New Richmond and Williamsburg plan a Sunday doubleheader with an 8 to 2 start over 4 to 0 score lines.
The Farm Bureau and Grange legislative committee met July 16 18 with the Commissioners to discuss the county budget. They urged reducing the debt retirement levy to 245 mills and lowering the road levy from 2 mills to 135 mills for 1938, scaling down office expenditures, publicizing a $30000 utility tax relief in five years or via a 25000 bond, and holding a public hearing to hear residents. They also urged local groups to push for further economies, noting the bulk of taxes fund schools and other local boards.
The Hamilton Clermont 4-H Club Camp starts Sunday July 24 and runs for a week of activities for members from both counties. Courses include leathercraft needlecraft first aid swimming recreation games rifleshooting chorus singing and nature study. Last year 196 members attended. over 200 expected this year. Naomi Bell presided July 15. a dress fitting demonstration by Nellie Roye preceded a leader’s talk and work period.
Ralph Lubbe a 21 year old Covington Kentucky man drowned Sunday night after falling from a speed boat on the Ohio river above New Richmond His body was recovered Monday morning The coroner Dr Curliss ruled accidental death from drowning
The Cherry Grove 4 H Hustlers gathered at Mrs. Charles Guat derley's home to sew garments and hold a business meeting. Members discussed a trip to Coney Island and noted a pleasant time with other clubs before adjourning to resume sewing in July 1982.
