A week of mishaps hits Clermont with injuries from a horse kick to a stroller, heat exhaustion, a nurse’s accident, a hand cut, a boy's knee gash, a sunstruck horse, a drowning at Loveland, a suicide by Edenton man, a collapse during a fit, and a fatal horse death while returning home.
J. B. Agnew of Pennsylvania declined the superintendent’s job while Mr. Wannamaker considers an Ohio man as a possible replacement for the position.
Samuel Davis, a Symmes township farmer, was away last Sunday when burglars entered his house and abstracted 300 dollars from a bureau. A gold watch remained untouched. A note on household risk accompanies the report.
A Georgia farmer claims gutting lower eye lashes on cows makes fences seem three times higher. He suggests cutting upper lashes would create a reverse illusion. He argues such perception shifts could unsettle grass, milkmaids, dogs and other farming tools, causing cows to become cynical and produce sour milk.

A Mt Carmel resident argues the Universalist church originated Children's Sunday. She cites Dr Leonard of Taft's College noting 1863 as the first observance in Chelsea Mass. Ohio followed in 1865 at Springboro Universalist church. The state church formalized the custom by 1870.
Frank Sprague, once janitor of the schoolhouse, in ill health and domestic woes, tried to hang himself at his father’s barn after drinking with acquaintances. His mother found him, Dr Len Moore cut the rope, and Sprague was kept under watch as his wife left with their two children. The Sprague family, once prosperous, grieves over reverses that left him despondent.
Ruth Johnson of Clermont, widow of Lucien Johnson and sister of H. V. Kerr, died after a revolver under her pillow discharged while she cleaned a bed. The weapon, discharged at close range, caused a fatal abdomen wound. A note from Anna Kerr Wayland described her calm faith and dying blessing.
No. 15 held a literary gathering at Miss Anna Somermier's home featuring Charles Dickens as the evening's subject. Miss Hattie Iden earned praise as president for preparing and guiding the program, with standout moments including Miss Barber's solo and a Pickwick Papers dialogue by Mrs. Page and Elmer Fagley. The event was described as a Dickens of a good time.
The Portsmouth Press reports William F. Moore and Bertha A. Van Duzen wed after a courting romance. Van Duzen worked at Cranston's woolen mills and knit a sock with her name and address. Moore, who runs a Salida creek store near Ironton, bought the socks and wrote to her. The couple plans a life together with Van Duzen knitting fancy hose for Moore.
Deputy Auditor Dimmitt's ill child headlined a roundup of visitors around Batavia including M Lytle and wife from Cincinnati, Higgins and daughter Adda of Loveland, and families from Dayton and Lima. Several locals faced health scares, while others enjoyed summer visits and community events at homes and inns. The column closes with a quip about the Bantam fair and its entry requirements.
Bethel news notes Dr. Thompson never claimed army service and did not publish outside papers. It states he was appointed first assistant surgeon for the 7th Regiment Ohio Volunteers in 1863 but declined to serve for reasons. It calls him a consistent Republican and a steadfast friend to soldiers.
In Batavia, Friday and Saturday, Mt. Oreb marshal and deputy searched for a Kansas murderer hiding in the county. A man fitting the description was not found and released after examination. Marshal Harvey Myrick accompanied them. A $1,000 reward is offered for the arrest. Authorities warn several suspicious parties lurk near Clermont.

The Bantam C G P station agent Santford Monjar aged 35 was killed when two trains passed as he walked after returning from Bethel with his family. Earlier reports noted he may have stayed to watch fireworks. His funeral drew many friends. he belonged to Odd Fellows Masons and Sons of Veterans.
Eli Kratzer of Bethel died at home on the 2nd instant at age seven. He was born in Brown County and lived in Brazier thirty years, moving to Bethel last year. Eliza Vorhees of Tabasco died at her home on the 2nd instant after paralysis. Funeral by Rev. Moore and burial at Mt. Moriah on July 3. David Fisher, mail agent for the C G and P on assignment by President Hayes, died at his Georgetown home after four weeks’ illness leaving a wife and several children.
The jury found Britton guilty of murder in the second degree. Defense counsel filed a motion for a new trial. The accused received the verdict calmly, but his wife wept upon seeing his emotion afterward.

The Riverview Chautauqua Assembly opened Tuesday at Assembly Hall New Richmond with lectures music and social events. Speakers covered elocution stenography typewriting newspaper work hypnotism and a cantata Queen Esther. The program continued with lectures on Nile Egypt Shakespeare and the Home of Shakespeare plus sermons and vesper services.
