A Cincinnati bound passenger train derailed after crossing the Duckwall trestle near Batavia during a record flood in June. Engineer Ben Anson steered the train clear, saving many lives. several passengers and crew were injured, with a few seriously hurt but none fatally. Rescue and support followed as trains recommenced service, and local residents aided victims.
A correspondent writes from Cincinnati defending personal efforts amid criticism in local papers. The writer, nearly recovered, denies exaggeration of interviews and emphasizes care for an injured friend, Mr Hunt, and expresses annoyance at misreporting.
In Goshen township on Monday Johnnie Kerr five son of J D Kerr was injured when a mower sickle bar struck his legs as he handed up the thong to his uncle Marion Myers The calf of the right leg was cut and the left leg opened to the bone with a torn tendon The child was treated by a physician and taken to his grandfather Dr J E Myers home where his mother Mrs Kerr tended by Mrs Myers is ill.
The Felters of Goshen hosted a grand June 29 celebration for their twenty fifth wedding anniversary. About four hundred guests attended from Butler Clinton Brown and Warren counties. activities included tennis croquet baseball dancing and lawn dining with Edenton band performances.

Miss Emma Coombs of Owensville sails for South America to Buenos Aires then Mendoza to teach in an English school. She will earn about 200 dollars monthly, living with relatives Mr. and Mrs. Drees, missionaries in Argentina. Mendoza lies at 2891 feet, an inland trade hub near Chile. She plans a European return and has previously spent months in Mexico.
In Stirling Indiana Barney the near horse of Moore and Stirling's white hearse team died of pneumonia last Wednesday night. The pair valued at 1600 dollars were seven years old in April and imported by Mr. Moore in 1886. A hot bath by a groom ten days earlier led to one horse collapsing and the other developing pneumonia. Rumors of poisoning were disproved as city doctors treated the animals. Moore hopes to replace the team but the loss leaves a deep personal ache for all who saw them convey the departed Prince to final rest.

James W. Hartman longtime Jackson township resident died when struck by lightning on Friday June 27 while near his horses near Lebanon. His team collapsed and he fell between the animals as funeral services were held at Monterey Presbyterian church with G A R post members and Rev John Burdsal officiating. Hartman enlisted in the 27th O V I at age sixteen and served with honor.
John W. Kain a prominent Batavia resident dies at his North Street home at 3 20 in the afternoon from Brights disease. Born January 3 1815 in Williamsburg he married Mary Lukens in 1837 and Caroline Moore in 1858. A former Cincinnati merchant and deputy sheriff he was a fifty three year Mason and charter member of Batavia Lodge. Funeral at 5 30 tomorrow from his residence under Mason auspices.
Sheriff Tatman unveils a blooded colt born the day of Foraker's nomination for a third term. He declares the foal will be a flyer and a sure winner, naming him Joseph with bold certainty.

Mrs Mary Evans Collins wife of Theodore W Collins was interred at Maplewood Cemetery Ripley after a brief illness. She was born near Georgetown in April 1904 and married in 1921 mother of two children with twenty four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Rev William Mahan a well known Methodist divine died at his Lebanon home funeral held at Owensville today.
