Widow in Loveland Attempts Suicide by Cremation
Mrs. Jane Crooks of Loveland widow of Henry Crooks attempted self destruction last week using coal on her clothing and setting fire to it. Despondent and unbalanced, she was rescued by her daughter who smothered the flames. Dr Wakefield attended and gave no hope of recovery. Attendees noted other local visitors and funeral attendances afterward.

Early Clermont County History of Bounties and Court Birth
In Clermont County history, 1804 to 1810 bounties were paid for wolves in Williamsburg and surrounding areas. Notable earners included Enoch Gest, James Gest, John Gest, David Brunk, and James Waits. Bears appeared but were not a recurring threat, and a bear incident near G W Hulick’s residence frightened a visiting woman and children. Williamsburg served as shiretown until 1817 when Batavia became the seat, with court activities moving to a new courthouse built in Batavia by Ezekiel Dimmitt after a 1826 plan. The Batavia courthouse, started 1827 and completed 1829, cost $3,488 for the contract and $827,533 for extras, though Dimmitt earned little actual money. The structure stands as a lasting testament to his labor, while the surrounding public buildings sit on a square laid out by George Ely and David Jamieson.

Former Batavian Dies at 90 After Long Illness
Mrs. H. V. Kerr of Batavia died July 4 at her daughter’s home in Chicago after a long illness. She moved with family to Kansas in 1887 for ten years then to Chicago where she passed away aged 90 years minus one month. She leaves a niece, Mrs. Josephine Hulick, of Batavia. Burial is in Odd Fellows cemetery Batavia Monday morning after services in Chicago Sunday afternoon.

Crops Report: Corn Good Color and Height. Early Potatoes Poor
With the long drought the crop looks fair overall. Corn shows good color and height while oats and meadows have been cut. Early potatoes yield is under half a crop and some early grain has suffered. A few gardeners reported ripe tomatoes on the Fourth. Roast ears arrived Saturday morning at 2 cents a dozen and tomatoes at 10 cents a pound.
