Honas Hugo Dies in Motorcycle Crash near Hamlet

John Honas Hugo a 22 year old Batavia resident died instantly Monday when a borrowed motorcycle hit a culvert on the Ohio Pike near Hamlet. Officials cite possible gasoline leak diverting attention before loss of control. Survived by wife Gladys Waggal Hugo and his parents George and Mrs Hugo. Funeral set for Thursday with Moore Funeral Home in charge.

Clermont County Board Approves Bills in Adjourned Session

Clermont County commissioners met in Batavia on Tuesday July 6 with all members present. They approved numerous bills including supplies, legal ads, payrolls, rent, equipment, and hospital care costs. Bids for mowing weeds in townships were opened and one bid pair was approved while others were rejected.

Teen bicyclist struck by hit and run driver near Batavia

Joseph Dawson a 16 year old from near Batavia was hit by an automobile driven by William Cassler on the Ohio Pike near Hamlet at about 6 p m Saturday. He was riding a bicycle and was taken to Dr Mott Amelia with a leg fracture. A warrant for Cassler's arrest was issued Tuesday.

Sheriff Clears Robberies In Two Counties

Two major recent robberies near Felicity and New Richmond were partially solved by the sheriff and Hamilton County police. Red Auxier identified owners of a Plymouth abandoned near Felicity and recovered loot from Castlen Department Store in Cincinnati. In New Richmond, investigators learned the Plymouth had been stolen from Painter's Garage with no known time of theft. Mrs Castlen identified about two thirds of the loot in Cincinnati, where it was found behind a garage at 1649 Clayton Street. Commodore Spear, 25, faces five burglary charges related to the New Richmond case.

Big Still Raided by Sheriff Near Batavia

A large still capable of producing hundreds of gallons of homebrew was found Tuesday by Sheriff Garland Auxier on the Batavia Stonelick Road two miles northwest of Batavia. Operators fled, twenty two barrels of mash were demolished, and a large quantity of bootleg liquor was poured out. No clues to the bootleggers, in operation about three weeks, were found, but authorities expect they will not return to Clermont County.

E E Houghton Dies After Brief Illness in Felicity

E E Houghton a Felicity resident of over fifty years died at his home after a brief illness Tuesday night. A former railway conductor and later a butcher, he was a Mason, D of A and Cincinnati Street Railway Union member. Funeral services were held Friday at Broadwell Funeral Home with Masonic services Thursday evening. Survived by wife Belle, son W M Houghton, daughter Marie Speidel and grandchildren.

Township road bids reapplied and paving plan approved

Motion by Mr. Seyler and seconded by Mr. Willis re adverts remaining townships. All yeas favor placing black top and stone on Felicity-Felesburg and Cedron roads if the state assumes Felicity-Feesburg as part of the state highway system. Cost to match prior plan.

Williamsburg Men In Collision Fatal for 16 Year Old

John Croswell aged 16 of Williamsburg died seven hours after a head on crash on Columbia Avenue near McDowell Street. Sydney Wymer 37 sustained chest injuries and facial cuts while nine other occupants suffered less serious fractures and cuts. Marvin Young of Cincinnati drove the other car. both vehicles were near the center of the road according to patrolmen.

Grandle Tidd Rites Solemnized on July Fourth

John Grandle of Leesburg and Miss Margaret Tidd of Careytown were quietly married Sunday at Bethel Methodist Church. The bride, an employee at Morris Store, and groom, a Mead Paper Corp. worker in Chillicothe, will reside in Chillicothe after the ceremony officiated by Rev. B. E. Wright.

Tib Brown Dies At Home In Bethel Village

George Tibbets Brown of Edgewood Farm near Bethel Clermont County died Monday at about 8:30 AM at his home. He was born in Mt Holly spent life in Bethel area with a few years in Colorado. Survived by wife Ruie and five children Faryl Ely Edward Susan Swing and Rahama Fagley plus three grandchildren and brother Gus. Funeral Wednesday at 2 PM from the farm with Rev Fisher officiating Bethel Cemetery Interment there Kennedy Funeral Home in charge.

Guardsmen Guard Duty In Youngstown District

Lt. Forrest E. Ely reports Batavia company quarte red in Adams Elementary School near Republic Steel plant area described as most threatening. Battalions from Hillsboro Blanchester Springfield Manchester coordinate while Sargeant Schieszler leads cooks. Hostility from strikers noted though no outbreaks. Governor maintains 4,800 guardsmen in city and 1,200 nearby armed with gas and rifles.

Batavia Guardsmen Guard Duty At Mills And Patrols

The Batavia company will perform guard duty at the mills from 3:00 to 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. with eight hours on reserve for emergencies. It also conducts emergency patrols. a ten man armed unit travels on a truck. The Governor is expected to retain the Guardsmen.

Fourth of July Celebration Draws Large County Crowd

Batavia held a Monday night Fourth of July on the school grounds with a mammoth fireworks display starting about 9 00 p m. The show was a gift of Judge Hugh Nichols and organized by the local American Legion post. Attendance ranged from five hundred to fifteen hundred, and the crowd agreed the display ranked with the best in the county.

Dr W E Thompson Celebrates 100th Birthday Visit

Tuesday the venerable doctor spoke from Walter Bee Dairy Farm where he toured Monday to observe wheat harvesting. Bethel postmaster calls him his best customer for the first two days. From West Virginia comes word that the doctor’s wife suffered a severe stroke and rests at home, slowly improving.

Free Canning Demonstration at Bethel Grange Hall

A free canning demonstration will be held July 10 at 10 00 a m at the Bethel Grange Hall. Sponsored by the Clermont County Extension Service and the Resettlement Administration with Bethel Grange cooperation, the event features home economist Mrs Gladys Ayers who will show water bath and pressure cooker canning of non acidic vegetables and open kettle canning of tomatoes.

Georgetown Debates Municipal Light Rates and Plant

Georgetown officials and a Cincinnati Gas and Electric representative reviewed a rate cut in exchange for a ten year contract. The current contract expires in eighteen months. Officials study a municipal power plant costing about 100000 to replace CGE service with John Wyatt presenting.

Judge Trabalishes Over New Probate Office Cabinets

Judge Orvie Halbisch watched with excitement as Art Metal Construction Co. from Jamestown New York installed steel filing cabinets for probate court records in Batavia assisted by Virgil Iles and Thomas Remley. The $1 982 bid led a spectrum of offers from $2 382 to $3 675 as the office expands its storage.
