Rush hour travelers know the bottleneck on Ohio 28. the county growth fuels traffic problems. Don Buckley, executive director, weighs in on the impact and possible remedies.
Clermont County planners and county engineer Ralph Palmer identify Ohio 28 as the main problem area due to high traffic, strip development, and numerous turning movements. They criticize rapid growth, limited zoning foresight, and lack of planning expertise, noting a 1983 KZF study and the Route 28 Steering Committee as partial steps forward.
Clermont County officials adopt Ohio 28 as top traffic priority and seek a consultant to develop a county thoroughfare plan. The study aims to guide future development, involve ODOT, and reduce daily congestion as growth continues in Clermont. Study underway within a month, nine months to complete if approved.
Buckley warns a vast development wave could come east on Ohio 32 from Glen Este Williamsville Road to Batavia hill. The controlled access highway has 10 existing intersections and 15 allowed more, restricted only if state buys out. Union Goshen and Miami townships push planning to limit curb cuts and create service roads and wide rights of way to keep traffic flowing.
Clermont's economic growth faces transport and rail deficiencies. Ford's plant access to Norfolk and Western highlights limited rail routes around Af ton and Williamsburg. I-275 is the main north south artery and developers urge mid county industrial sites to spur jobs and housing. Local officials say sewage and capacity can be expanded to accommodate new industry while praising parks, access to Cincinnati, and strong schools as inducements for business. Budd's Towing offers free removal of old cars with proceeds aiding Muscular Dystrophy Association.
