Betsy Nichols Wins D of C Honor Grant for Barnard College

Betsy Nichols receives a four year Honorarium grant from the Daughters of Cincinnati Scholarship Committee to attend Barnard College New York City. Betsy is Batavia High School valedictorian 1968 National Merit finalist and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh L. Nichols II of Batavia.

Hero's Medals Given Parents at Home Ceremony

A young soldier killed in Vietnam is posthumously honored with the Purple Heart and multiple service decorations in a home ceremony on Jester Road. Warrant Officer Virgil Pirtle presented the awards to Mance Wright and his wife in Kings Mills.

Mt Carmel Legion Prepares For July Fourth Festival

Mt Carmel American Legion Post 72 on Weiner Lane gears up for a four day Fourth of July celebration. The festival opens at 6 p.m. with a parade at 7 p.m. on Old SR 74 ending at Mt. Carmel School for street light dedication. Airplane prize drops at 8 p.m. and 2 p.m. on the Fourth, spaghetti dinners, games, refreshments, ample parking, and a large fireworks display are planned.

Heckter Wins Five Year Reappointment On Zoning Board

Union Township trustees reappointed Peter A. Heckter to a new five year term on the zoning board of appeals. Jim Harris of North Union and Cliff Schaerges of Williamsville Fire Department were named fire prevention officers for 1968. Zoning maps will be sold at 1 dollar. A zoning change for Romohr and Romohr east of Mt. Carmel Tabasco Rd. was approved after a June 17 hearing. June expenditures totaled 18508.46 across Cemetery Police Road and General funds.

Grant To Benefit Clermont Schools

Congressman William H. Harsha announced that the Appalachia Committee approved a grant of $238 832 to supplement a National Defense Education grant for 149 districts in 28 counties of Appalachian Ohio. The 6th District counties listed include Adams Brown Clermont Highland Pike Ross and Scioto.

Tate-Monroe Water Group Seeks Fees and Signatures

Ray Morton leads the Tate Monro e Township Water Association planning a 110 mile rural Clermont County system. Volunteers will collect tap fee deposits of 75 by August 1 1968 and obtain Water Users Agreements while mapping home locations. Construction planned January 1969 with 500000 gallon storage at Nicholsville and smaller tanks at Bethel Bantam D X Ranch and Moscow.

Burg Bethel Phone Survey Due July 15

Williamsburg and Bethel are urged to respond by July 15 on a Clermont County Farm Bureau survey. Mrs. William Marshall chairs the effort to gauge interest for extended toll free service, with results to be filed as proof to the Public Utilities Commission.

Glen Este High School Troy Janettes and Mt. Carmel American Legion Post 72 Legionette Color Guard prepare for Loveland Fourth of July, Newtonsville July 11, and Norwood parade the week of July 21. In Dayton’s June Third District American Legion Parade, the Legionettes won first and the Trojanettes took third.

Chaplain Waddle Honored for Service at Fort Benning

Capt W Richard Waddle former Batavia church pastor received multiple awards at Fort Benning Georgia for service with U S Army servicemen. He was named honorary infantryman and awarded the Sixth Student Battalion Infantry plaque and the Prayer plaque along with commendation letters from brigade chaplain and unit commanders. He plans to depart for Vietnam arriving August 8. Mrs Waddle and the children reside on Mc Abee Lane Greenville Tennessee until his return.
