The Milford Kiwanis Club met on June 24 at Sigh Samad's Wishing Well in Perintown. A chicken and steak dinner followed by entertainment capped the evening.
The East End Merchants stunned Goshen 3 to 1 as part of a three way lead in the county league. Georgetown beat Edenton 1 to 0 to stay tied with Williamsburg, while Bethel defeated the Aces 28 to 1 in an abbreviated game. Next Sunday matchups and a league meeting on Monday July 6 at Bata via 8 p m.
Hogs reach a new high at the Cincinnati Stockyards with a top price of 14.75 dollars, the highest paid since 1926, signaling strong demand for hogs and a record-setting sale.
Tommy Patchell fifteen year old son of Mr and Mrs Lloyd Patchell of Owensville died Thursday evening after his bicycle skidded on a loose berm and the bike rider collided with a car driven by George W Robinson. The driver was not at fault. The Patchell family recently moved from Oklahoma to Batavia then Owensville.
All private and public business houses in Bata will close for the day on Saturday July Fourth. It is understood most shops will reopen Friday night for the holiday.
The Batavia Speedliners defeated the Madisonville Lions 5 to 2. Anstaett pitched five innings allowing five scattered hits, Day retired the final four without a hit. Ireton the Batavia center fielder collected a single, a double and a triple in five plate appearances.
Thomas J R Cooper husband of Elizabeth Ford Cooper died at home near Amelia Ohio on Tuesday June 30. Remains are at Moore Funeral Home Batavia with a prayer service Friday at 10 30 a.m. Funeral and interment are in Kentucky Friday at 1 p.m.
The Methodist church at Williamsburg hosts the June 27 wedding of Miss Alice Marie Rowan to Russell W. Livengood both of the community. The bride wears white silk Marquisette and satin with lace trim. she carries a white Bible. Reception follows at the couple's home two miles south of Williamsburg before a short wedding trip.
The Woman's Society of Christian Service at Summerside Methodist Church will hold a covered dish luncheon at noon on Thursday July 2. The business session starts at 1 30 p m with Mrs George Mash presiding. Mrs W N McGraw leads the program titled A Ching College and Its Influence. Hostesses are Mrs Wm Schneider and Mrs A H Theis.
The Mt. Carmel-Glen Este PTA sponsors a Lawn Fete on school grounds July Fourth with events for all ages. Activities include Pony Track, Mouse Game, Girl Scout booth, 4 H grill, ice cream, fish pond, prizes, badminton, dancing, and a cafeteria. Proceeds support the PTA for the coming school year.
William L. Brodie known as Bill and owner of the Old Farm House on Route 50 near Owensville died suddenly last Friday morning at 47 after a lengthy heart condition. A nationally known figure in horse racing, he raced his horses at major tracks in the U S and Cuba and served as business manager for the Foot Health Institute of Cincinnati.
Applications for canning sugar may be made at the Goshen School Building each Thursday from 1 to 5 p m and from 6 to 9 p m.
The Builder's Class of Summerside Methodist Church will hold its monthly meeting at the home of Mr and Mrs Lawrence Jones in Glen Este on Friday evening July 3rd. Mrs Ellsworth Lang will open the business session and roll call by verse containing the word Behold. Members are asked to bring filled bank books and attend for a good time planned by Earle Kincaid chair of games and entertainment.
F. J. Stahl of Batavia Ohio sold 39 hogs at the Cincinnati Union Stockyards bringing the top price of 14.85 per hundred pounds.
Gov Bricker leading Ohio Civilian Defense Week from July 4 to 11 with many cities planning Victory Parades. A Red White and Blue Print guide outlines parade steps and walking floats while models of incendiary bombs are shown. Blackout tests planned in larger cities with some centers already rehearsed.
A 1942 Buick demonstrator owned by Howard Ayers was stolen from Second Street in front of his business. Cincinnati police and the State Highway Patrol found the car early Tuesday. The vehicle was missing its four wheels and tires, and evidence suggests the theft occurred in about 15 minutes.
John Edward Haggerty, 22, enlisted in the U S Army Air Corps on June 12 and is the eldest son of Mr and Mrs Oren Haggerty of Amelia. He is stationed at Fort Thomas Kentucky and hospitalized with a broken bone from maneuvers. He earned a duty medal and previously worked as a first class machinist at Wright Aeronautical Corp Lockland.
The Henry Clark Corbin Auxiliary No. 79 United Spanish War Veterans sent members Mrs Laura Skinner Mrs Sally Lillich Mrs Nora H Krantz Mrs William Wilson Mrs Florence Edinger Miss Naomi Edinger Mrs Mary Callahan Mrs Huith Warren and Mrs Kallie Rusk to the Department Convention in Cincinnati at the Hotel Gibson. Department president Lily Lloyd visited Batavia on May 14 and inspected there overnight. The local Auxiliary will meet next on the second Thursday in July.
