The Batavia four day carnival drew good attendance though rain limited Friday fun. Legion Drum Corps led parades with visitors from Middletown Hamilton Norwood Cincinnati and Mt Washington. Beauty contest prizes totaled 50 for first and 25 for second with 11 entrants. A fireworks display followed the street carnival and a marriage announcement结束 for Virginia Levis Gelvin’s daughter.

Bridge at Elklick Threatens Collapse
The 210 foot covered wooden bridge over the East Fork at Elklick leans toward collapse. The center pier, aging logs about a century old, has twisted and the structure is closed to travel after a safety sign was placed by Commissioner Seyler following Sheriff Roberts’ inspection. A detour will be needed while the county plans repairs.

Twins Drown During Fourth of July Outing in Ohio
Walter and Edward Rowan of Cincinnati drowned while swimming at Nine Mile below New Richmond on Saturday afternoon. Their twin bodies were recovered after a neighbor-led search as Dr. Gaskins assisted for an hour. The pair, visiting for a day from Dearborn Street, were pronounced dead and prepared for a two funeral service set for Tuesday at White Funeral Home in New Richmond.

Frank Rapp a Stone Lick Township farmer died of heat prostration last Thursday afternoon. Paul Hourstickle a local boy found him while summoning for supper. Dr Rapp and Coroner Curtis declared death. He was 65 leaving a family. Funeral Saturday at Stonelick Catholic church. First heat death reported in the county.

Auditors from seven southwestern Ohio counties gathered at Lebanon on Friday June 26 to discuss general problems in real estate reappraisal. Tom Malott Arrested for Disorderly Conduct in Batavia
Tom Malott, new arrival in Batavia, was arrested by Marshal Reynolds Monday and brought before Mayor Homer Wilson. He pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and was fined 100 dollars and sentenced to 90 days in jail, suspended on condition of leaving the township within 48 hours after being found peeping into windows at night.

Cloud Burst Causes Heavy Flooding in Ohio Township
A cloudburst near Twelve Mile Bridge on State Route 132 dumped 54 inches of rain over two hours Friday night. Floodwaters scoured a 40 foot wide channel through the pike, overturned two autos, wrecked drift, and washed away a 50 foot steel concrete bridge at Retzner road. Howard Carson escaped drowning, repairs followed Monday, and Clermont County faces about 50,000 dollars in road-structure damage.

Parole Reforms Set Soon to Free 4000 Prisoners
Columbus Ohio July 1 Release of about 4000 prisoners from the penitentiary and London prison farm is expected in September under new parole laws. About 1680 are in the penitentiary and 700 in the prison farm. The Gillen bill raises parole eligibility and allows sentences to be reduced for good behavior. The reform also lets prisoners be represented by attorneys before the parole board. The new four member parole board will earn 6000 dollars annually each, replacing the prior two members at 3600 dollars. The clemency board's cost is estimated near 50000 dollars yearly.
