Carnival a Success at all Batavia Shows
The four day Batavia Carnival drew about six thousand attendees despite Friday rain. Highlights included a Legion Drum Corps parade with visitors from Middletown Hamilton Norwood Cincinnati and Mt. Washington, a boxing event, a beauty contest won by Mildred Edwards, and a fireworks display after a street carnival. Prizes totaled $50 for first, $25 for second, and $5 for third with 11 contestants. An upcoming wedding for Batavia native Virginia Levis Gelvin to Willard James Schindler is announced for July 25 at Hotel Cincinnati.

Twist Bridge Over East Fork Near Elklick Faces Collapse
The 210 foot covered wooden bridge spanning East Fork at Elklick is near collapse as the center pier, set on logs about a century ago, rusts away. Sheriff Roberts and Commissioner Seyler inspected the site and posted a block, closing the structure. This is the county’s largest covered bridge and a detour will be used while commissioners plan repairs after recent reflooring costs.

Twin brothers drown on Fourth of July outing at Nine Mile
Walter and Edward Bonap of Cincinnati drowned Saturday afternoon at Nine Mile near New Richmond during a country outing. One brother could not swim and called for help. the other died trying to rescue him. Neighbors and Dr. Gaskins searched the stream for an hour before recovery. The bodies lie at White Funeral Home in New Richmond with a double funeral planned for Tuesday.

Redent arrival Tom Malott jailed for peeping in Batavia
Tom Malott was arrested by Marshal Reynolds and brought before Mayor Homer Wilson after entering Batavia. He pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct, receiving a $100 fine and 90 days in jail. The case notes he was peeping into windows at night.

A cloudburst last Friday night near Twelve Mile Bridge and Goebel Hill on State Route 182 drenched Clermont County. Two hours of heavy rain flooded streams, damaged fields, demolished one 50 foot steel concrete bridge, and moved a 500 pound stone. Two autos were wrecked. several minor bridges lost. Columbus Ohio reports that about 4000 prisoners will be released under new parole laws taking effect soon. Of these, 1680 are in the penitentiary and 700 at London prison farm, representing over one third of all prisoners. The Gillen bill broadens parole eligibility and shortens sentences for good behavior. Attorneys may now represent defendants before the parole board, which will be four members earning 6000 dollars each. current board pays two members 8600 dollars annually.
