At a Rotary Committee meeting the Hospital Care quota of 650 by February 1 remains short by about 100 families. Chairman Russell Speidel says public laxity in returning cards is the issue and urges immediate returns. If needed a house-to-house canvass with Women’s Clubs may be used in the final days. Only five days remain to enroll.
Only 31 Clermont County men were inducted into the armed services for the January quota, matching recent rates. Twelve registrants from Board No 1 were inducted, including Earl Judd, Andrew Cooper, and Charles Runyan. Board No 2 sent nine to the Navy and Army draftees listed, with 53 registrants to Ft Hayes from Board 1 and 54 from Board 2 for pre induction exams.
The first meeting of the Sportsmen's Club will be held at their new Club House on the Batavia Elklick Road three miles south of Batavia. The meeting is set for 7 30 P M Thursday January 25 with elections of officers and a financial report on the agenda.
John Friend, county treasurer, announced that Harry Collins of the State Sales Tax Department will be at the county treasurer's office next Tuesday, January 30, to help residents with sales tax issues. He will be in Clermont County only that one day this year due to department workload.
A memorial mass for Staff Sergeant Thomas G. Clancy of Milford was conducted at St Andrews Catholic Church. The 21-year-old aerial gunner and radio operator from Milford High School was killed August 4 when a B 24 bomber crashed near its Saipan base. His father works for the State Highways Department and Clancy is the fourth Milford area serviceman to die in action.
Representative John Hayden of Clermont County is reappointed chairman of the Ohio House Highway Committee for the 96th General Assembly, with a busy agenda ahead. He also serves as vice chair of the Educational Committee and sits on the Health Committee. the group will push several highway bills including emergency appropriations. Hayden has filed multiple bills, such as an $8 million capital-improvement bill, tax adjustments on motor fuels, military active-duty hunting and fishing exemptions for 1945 and 1946, and a veteran-related program known as the Hayden Bonus Bill with a $35 million appropriation.
Two Batavia men serve overseas as American Red Cross field directors. Harold D. Nichols, former Clermont County Red Cross chairman, is in New Caledonia. Elmer A. Kramer recently arrived in India after leaving Batavia High School teaching to join Red Cross.
Milford officials consider extending fire protection to parts of Miami and Union Townships with a second pumper truck due later this year. Extensions would depend on adequate rural and village coverage, funding plans, and water supply, with no decision until the new truck arrives in late spring or early summer.
Secretary of State Edward J. Hummel proposes to seek a joint resolution from the General Assembly to amend Article V Section 1 of the Ohio Constitution. The change would allow every legal Ohio elector aged 18 or older to vote, with elections held by special or general election as prescribed. Hummel notes that 18-year-olds serving in the military are old enough to vote and participate in national affairs.
Letters and notices from Clermont County residents highlight wartime service news. Evelyn Bath Tes leaves for Edgewood Arsenal while Staff Sgt Carl Falch is listed as missing in Belgium. Navy hero Chief Garman earns the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for Guadalcanal actions. Other locals, including Donald Newell and Ann Gatch, serve aboard ships and in air units.
Girl Scouts of Batavia elect officers Marilyn Iles as President Peggy Patchell Vice President Maryann Meschel Secretary Nancy Patchell Treasurer Sonia Minnick and Darline Jenkins Custodians Lois Tucker Publicity at their regular meeting. Cincinnati Area Council Boy Scouts Clermont County District held its annual meeting at Batavia High School with remarks by Russell F. Speidel and a program highlighting district staff and future Scouting plans.
Miss Eleanor Birkhimer of Piketon Ohio becomes station agent and operator at Batavia N and W office to free her brother Charles serving in England as a yard clerk in the Railway Operating Battalion. She works with Miss Mabel Wilson of Glenn Hayes West Virginia as part of nine women replacing nineteen men as manpower grows.
Clermont County Rationing Board invites retailers with processed foods and meat shortages to apply for inventory adjustments before February 10 and sugar shortages before February 18. Enforcement warned for overdrafts. Newtonsville man pleads guilty to selling tires without certificates. mileage records required for Basic A ration eligibility and B or C ration issuance.
Milcroft Inn in Milford changes hands as Miss Genevieve Caldwell of Cincinnati sells to Mr. and Mrs. James Franklin. The 142 by 155 foot lot includes the inn and a stone annex housing a bar and grill. Franklin plans expansion as Kiwanis and guests frequent the site. The property was built over a century ago by John Kugler and once linked to his mill, distillery and stores.
