Amelia Mourns Two War Casualties

War Department notices confirm Pfc. Arthur Bachelier killed in France on December 13 after earlier being listed as missing in action. Harold Webb is reported killed in action in Belgium on January 10. Both were Amelia locals and former students, marking five Gold Star deaths for the town. mothers plan a public memorial service.

The January 24 meeting reviewed 1944 farm activity. Borrowers posted repayments over three times required, paid chattel loans, bought new machinery and livestock. Batavia Soldier Wounded in Action in Belgium

Mr and Mrs Sydney Sullivan of Batavia learned their son Kenneth H Sullivan was wounded in action in Belgium on January 7 He is a Private First Class with the Airborne Infantry overseas since last July and entered service in April 1942 He attended Batavia school and has many friends in Batavia who are grieved by the news.

Two Large Farms Sold in Jackson Township

Edmund J. Hadley of Cincinnati Gas and Electric Co sold his Monterey farm to Mrs. D Bainum of Shillo Company. He then bought 165 acres on Route 50 between Monterey and Marathon, featuring a seven room modern home and barn and the Hartman schoolhouse remodeled as a residence. The property, with family ties to Caleb Hadley and Revolutionary grandfather Christopher Hartman, has deep local history. Hadley also runs Guernsey cattle with son Donald. he is a shipper of Golden Guernsey milk to Cincinnati. The second farm sale was closed by Milford attorney Murphy.

Clermont County Home under Superintendent John Houser posted a 1944 net per capita cost of 198.29 dollars, well below the state average of 300. The Batavia area facility housed 68 residents with daily care averaging 65, including five men and two women over 85. Gross expenses reached 14,348 dollars, offset by farm sales and contributions to net 12,889 dollars.

Loveland Man Held in Slaying of Stepdaughter

Frank Kirk, 43, of Loveland, is charged with first degree murder in the slaying of his stepdaughter Louise Adkins, 23, at her home on Railroad Avenue. He was arraigned before Justice J M Wiseman and bound over to the Clermont County grand jury without bond. The shooting occurred as he sought his wife, Roxie Kirk. Kirk denies the shooting. authorities say he was intoxicated. The case, described by Loveland officials, involves a family dispute and remains under grand jury review.

Russell Speidel reports Batavia Hospital Care drive quota of 650 met early Tuesday with enrollment at the Court House indicating total memberships may exceed 700. The effort began January 15 under the Hospital Care Corporation Community Plan with Rotary Club sponsorship. Speidel led a campaign enlisting Boy Scouts and Junior Women to distribute literature and canvass neighborhoods.

Bronze Star for Sgt Carl Burger on Italian Front

Sgt Carl J. Burger, son of Mr and Mrs William Burger, earned a Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in Italy. He directed litter bearers through a mine field and helped evacuate 56 casualties across the Volturno River after selecting a safe route during heavy fighting. He is a veteran of African and Italian campaigns and a Williamsburg High School graduate of 1934.

The Church of St. Thomas More at Withamsville plans a pre-Lenten social on Sunday February 11 to raise funds for adding two rooms to reach an eight grade parochial school. Activities include games in the school, prizes worth 11 dollars in cash a 200 pound pig a fishing rod a coffee pot and a skillet plus a venison supper with a heritage sauce. Father Hunter Heider is noted for a deer shot in Allegheny State Park. A hearty welcome awaits attendees.
