The list shows Republican bids for county offices with Roy A. Hodges seeking Prosecuting Attorney in Clermont County and William E. Jobe running for Sheriff ahead of the May 14 primary. The filing deadline is 600 days before March primaries.
A large party attended the bingo event at the Eagles Home on Friday night and organizers report a pleasant time with lively participation and warm social atmosphere.
Many water pipes in Batavia froze during the recent cold spell creating plumbing work for local plumbers and likely disruption for residents.
A baby girl was born Saturday morning to Mr and Mrs Elmer Kramer. A baby boy was born Thursday to Mr and Mrs Walter Abrams.
The Botavia Rotary Club met in the high school cafeteria Tuesday night instead of the Bishop residence. Membership is growing, requiring more room. The school board gave consent for the move. The club has expanded beyond its current quarters.
Glen Este resident Mrs. Augustus Carstens died Saturday after a long illness. Funeral from Moore Funeral Home Monday with burial at Batavia. She leaves her husband and five children Roy Paul Betty Lou Evelyn and Mrs. Jas Gregg.
A late night blaze at the home of Miss Marguerite Ash was discovered Friday by James Sutton a colored janitor. Clark Gregg and the fire department arrived quickly extinguishing the fire with room damage from flames and water caused by an overheated furnace. No one was present. Miss Ash is visiting her brothers in California.
A birthday surprise honored Mr. Fred Binning on his 76th birthday. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Robert Berger, Ed Binning, and extended Binning family with wives, children, and guests such as Gene Annie Henry May Robert Gail Linda Emma Bertha Carrie Hutchinson.
The Amelia School Auditorium hosted the Amelia Community Institute event on January 17 and 18, drawing crowds despite subzero temperatures and shattering attendance records. Congratulations are extended to all participants and to the officers and board members. Officers for the year include President William Brothers, Vice President Edgar Mosbacher, Secretary and Treasurer Nellie E. Mattox, and Hostess Elizabeth Huling.
Roy A. Hodges of Milford announced this week his candidacy for Prosecuting Attorney of Clermont County subject to the Republican primary on May 14. A native of Milford, he studied at Virginia, Ohio State, Harvard, and Northwestern, was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1928, and has practiced in Milford Batavia and Cincinnati. He is a large Clermont County landowner active in farm groups and is married to Delma Stewart with one daughter.
The Mt. Carmel Glen Este PTA sponsors a basketball game between Mt. Carmel men and Glen Rose on Friday January 26 at 8 pm. Men will wear ladies attire. A girls game precedes the event. Admission is 25 cents for adults and 10 cents for children. Refreshments will be served by the PTA.
The primary election is set for Tuesday May 14 with candidacy declarations due by 6 30 p m Friday March 15. The general election is on Tuesday November 5 with nomination by petition due by 6 30 p m Friday September 6.
The Batavia Woman's Club met January 18 at Mrs. EK S Rush's home. President Mrs. R E Gifford was absent due to her husband's illness. Mrs. Claude Smith presided. Mrs. Robert Wall spoke on The Tragedy of Marihuana, alarming facts about the drug. A Safety panel with Mrs. H K Hillen, Mrs. John Huntington and Mrs. Wm. Jenike followed. Batavia High School students Lowell Rust, Thomas Jenike and Sidney Sullivan gave an educational talk on Accidents with charts prepared by Elmer Kramer and the Industrial Arts Class. Officer Cook of the Highway State Patrol Station at Wilmington discussed traffic laws and road safety. The program urged community safety and responsible action.
The Clermont County Republican Council schedules the largest rally yet as Republicans from across the county gather at the School Auditorium for a Lincoln Day dinner February 1 at 630 PM. Earl Eastwood says Carl Rich may speak. dinner costs 50 cents a plate and attendees should notify Joe Brock by January 30.
The Clermont County Council of Parent-Teachers Associations held a January 17 meeting to outline the February 21 Founders Day luncheon at Mt. Carmel Glen Este School with five tickets per local unit and extra tickets from Mrs Robt Morgan. Mrs Loyd Harlow led a Safety program featuring Mr Raquet of the Highway Patrol. A new unit forms in Williamsburg and joins local sister units. officers elected include Mrs Percy Mc Adams President Mrs Leslie Bohl Vice President Mrs Wilbur Smith Secretary and Mrs Stanley Frazier Treasurer.
Legion posts from Hamilton Clermont Warren Brown and Clinton counties will attend a National Defense dinner February 10 at the Hotel Netherland Plaza Cincinnati. Arthur W. Murray Jr and Frank W. Weaver rally support. Handley urges Legionaires to join observance of National Defense Week as a rebuff to saboteurs. Advance tickets available at Justin Rollman’s Union Central Building office.
The Amelia P. T. A. will host a Cafeteria Supper on Friday February 2 at 5 30 PM. Proceeds will fund the new school auditorium piano. A wide menu will be offered and the public is invited. Committee chairmen include Mrs C C Houser and others.
Mrs Margaret Auxier wife of Sheriff Garland G Auxier sues Clermont County Commissioners to secure 42250 for matron duties from Jan 1 1939 to Oct 18 1939 during jail demolition and construction. Commissioner Sam Ausman says Clermont had no jail then and no claim exists.
Clermont County Grange officers and workers met in the courthouse to outline goals for the new year. Sixteen granges exist in the county, thirteen represented. Owensville Moscow and New Richmond did not send delegates. Remaining conferences will include New Richmond on April 1 at 8 30 P M with programs exchange and Memorial Service plus county banquet. Past Deputy Wright Wolf and wife attended with Special State Deputy J A Ashton.
Funeral services for Dr George M Hite 51 Amelia physician who took over the Mott practice last September were held in Nashville Tenn He died suddenly Saturday of a heart attack in the Mott home He was born in Nashville and graduated from Cincinnati Eclectic Medical College in 1918 He interned in Brooklyn and practiced in Toledo and Nashville before moving to Amelia He held leadership roles in Eclectic Medical and Ohio State Medical associations and was vice president of the National Association at his death He was a member of Clermont County Medical Society the Ohio State Medical Association and the Masonic Order He leaves a daughter Georgia Lois Hite and a brother Dr J Harville Hite of Nashville.
Oyster Soup Supper will be held by the Willing Wo Class of the Franklin Church at Franklin School on Saturday January 27. The meal includes oyster soup sandwiches pie and coffee. Servings begin at 5 30 oclock.
Two postponed high school basketball games were played Saturday Bethel at Forestville and Hamersville at Felicity Bethel lost both games Forestville beat Bethel 43 21 in boys and 30 18 in girls Felicity defeated Hamersville 64 37 in boys and 15 19 in girls Myrle Ellis scored 23 and Bob Day 22 for Felicity respectively.
At the Jan 15 meeting the board awarded gasoline and oil contracts to Standard Oil via Alexander Reid at 18.5¢/gal and 50¢/gal respectively, plus diesel at 11.5¢/gal. Equipment rentals were fixed up to $6/hr. Limestone purchases and road markers were authorized for 1940 projects. The Jan 19 action included care for William Woods and relief spending of $680 from county funds with allocations by township.
Grand Jury indictments disclosed this week in Clermont County Common Pleas include Robert Young of New Richmond facing a 1 to 7 year term for housebreaking and grand larceny at Carter Chevrolet Service. Others pled guilty or not guilty to nonsupport. jurors for future hearings named. jail population drops to three.
The Junior Woman's Club has elected officers for 1940 41 starting September 1940. Mrs Randolph Reynolds is president Mrs Paul Hopping vice president Miss Helen Wolf corresponding secretary Mrs Dale Miller recording secretary Mrs John A Rapp treasurer.
Deputy Grand Master Ed Brunk led installation of Batavia I O F lodge officers on Friday night with Norwood brethren assisting. John Guinther named noble grand James Lewis vice grand Wm Brothers secretary E S Rush served as secretary.
Examinations for drivers licenses occur on the third Saturday each month from 12 noon to 5 pm at Batavia. Eight applied, six took the test, six passed, with two permits faulty. Examinations conducted by Corporal Raquet and Patrolman Wilson at Batavia No 2 and No 4 locations. Names include Clarkson Drum, Richard Simmson, Kenneth Suttles, Justin Harlow, and Reed Adams.
Mrs. Wallace Franks hosted with Mrs. Gilbert Lewis as co host on Wednesday the Clover Progressive club held an all day meeting. Seventeen members and six visitors attended. After dinner the program continued in the living room. New officers for the coming year include President Mrs S H Berens Vice President Mrs G M Burgett Secretary Mrs W E Bogart Treasurer Mrs Harry Johns and Press Reporter Mrs Lytle Creager.
