Coombs Named Zoning Inspector for Batavia Township

Deputy Sheriff Roger Coombs 57 of Batavia Township is appointed zoning inspector succeeding Harold Bissantz on the Batavia trustees board. A Lindale native and World War I veteran, Coombs has served as county jailer and will accept zoning permit applications at the sheriff's office 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. He will handle zoning at his home 3 to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Elderly Woman Dies After Two Car Crash Near Bethel

An elderly woman, Elizabeth Thomas, 92, died after a two car crash on SR 125 east of Bethel. Her heart attack followed the collision involving Rev. Gerstle M. Haggard, 67, and Arthur C. Pol Litt, 71, both Cincinnati residents. Haggard and his wife were hospitalized. Thomas died at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital. Funeral services planned for Thursday at Kennedy-Stevens Funeral Home Bethel with burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery.

Commissioners Order Sewer System Study

McGill and Smith Amelia consulting engineers conduct the study for the community sewer system. Residents will be notified when complete. The commission refuses a $28,000 retainer to Adrian Construction Co for two treatment plants due to unsatisfactory machinery from Chicago Pump Co. Performance bond for Harper Construction Co is withheld over leakage issues in the collection lines.

Loot Exceeds $7 000 In P O V F W Break-Ins

Thieves broke into the Owensville Post Office and Mt. Carmel VFW Post at Olive Branch over the weekend stealing loot exceeding 7 000 dollars. The Owensville safe contained 3100 plus stamps money order forms and a punch. The VFW Hall safe on Stoddard Lane held 4468 in cash after a Friday night fish fry.

Judge lauds Clermont youth group counseling program

Juvenile Court Judge Charles W. Jackson praised the group counseling effort started last April by the Clermont County Youth Commission and funded by local donations. Dr. Campbell Crockett and staff led about twenty five youths in three groups, with mixed results but overall encouraging signs and plans for expansion and further training.

Former Batavia Police Chief Ed Colonel to be Honored

Batavia Rotary Club will honor former Batavia Police Chief Ed Colonel at its January 28 meeting with the club’s outstanding civic service award. Mayor Richard C. Jamieson and the Village Council will attend as guests. Colonel served 22 years as chief, founded the Clermont County FOP chapter and Batavia Junior Police Auxiliary, and began police work in New Richmond before moving to Batavia in 1946. He retired in 1968 after a long record of service.

Mussey Aims to Ease Health Official Rule

State Rep. William H. Mussey will propose legislation to remove the requirement that a county health commissioner be a physician. He notes city laws do not mandate a physician and argues counties should have the same option. Clermont County seeks a public health administrator with a physician as consultant as it lacks a full time health commissioner.

Batavia police chief reports 1968 activity to village officials. 102 motor vehicle accidents, 16 injury crashes injuring 24, 44 arrests from accidents, 12 felony and 424 traffic arrests, 1 558 parking meter tickets, and $19 594 in vehicle damage plus $300 in village property losses.

Milford council delays building permit and street changes

The Milford Village Council delayed a building permit for Milford Shopping Center until storm sewer access is arranged. Signs were set for Lila Avenue to be one way west from Forest Avenue to Five Points. An Appropriations Ordinance for 1969 was approved along with an amendment to Ordinance 352. The council discussed chamber beautification and budget tightness.

Northeastern District Votes For Bond Issue in Special Election

Northeastern Clermont district voters approved a $390000 bond issue in a special election. The total 1377 votes included 883 for and 494 against, creating a 389 vote margin to fund a project totaling about $737553.

Sheriff's Year End Report Shows Broad Increases

The 1968 sheriff's annual report details rises in calls received by the radio dispatcher, with 8 019 compared to 6 914 the prior year. Vehicle responses rose to 3 457 from 3 081, meals served to prisoners grew to 27 812 at a cost of 11 466 57, while felonious crimes dropped to 528 from 863.
