Dr. G S VanHory explains how lungs, air, and blood exchange oxygen and carbonic acid, stressing ventilation's importance in homes and public buildings. Poor air causes colds, pneumonia, TB, and fatigue. proper vents, open windows, and floor-level exhaust improve health in schools, churches, courts, and theaters.
Petition circulates in Georgetown to stop Brown County from buying two road making outfits to be delivered in April. Circulators argue the county levy cannot fund three machines for seasonal road work. Clermont County already has one outfit that performs well when used.
Adams County Clerk of Courts O G Garman filed suit to test the constitutionality of the county officers salary law. He complains extra clerical work from election bribery investigations left him with little pay and seeks $3000 for additional work. About $12000 in fines from the investigation go to the county. if the law is struck down, the funds would go to him.
The January Term grand jury met last Monday at 9 a.m. and, after instructions from the Judge, examined witnesses in five cases and returned two true bills. They toured the jail and public buildings, finishing about 4 p.m. This was the county’s shortest grand jury session in years with little activity.
The Batavia Woman's Club held guest day at Mrs. P. F. Jamieson's home with about sixty three ladies attending. A playlet Engaging Jeanet and two solos by Bessie Walker energized the afternoon followed by a luncheon. Next meeting set for James Barr home with program on club work and leadership. A letter from R. B. Borges from Rocky Ford notes Mrs. Boggs' improving health and a planned Clermont visit. no rain since July.
Mrs. Thos. Daugherty spotted a five foot black snake under a dining room chair Saturday. She killed it in the backyard after its concealment near the screened door puzzled her. The origin remains unknown as the door was screened.
Tobacco raisers met at Nichols and Griffiths office to weigh not planting tobacco in 1911 to boost 1910 prices. Turnipseed urged restraint to gain better 1910 prices and future farm size limits in 1912. A general meeting set for January 28 to seek wider attendance and consider pooling crops.
Public installation of officers elect of the W. R. C. and 8. BR. 58 West Post, Milford town hall, featured music recitations and an address by a popular orator. Mrs. Greenfield led the ritual service, followed by Commander George Denham installing the new officers. The event drew a large, attentive audience in an active county unit.
A new public school building in Sabina Clinton county burned Thursday night about nine. Erected a year ago at cost 45000 the fire is blamed on heating pipes though the fireproof structure. The town’s engine failed and only with effort were other buildings saved. Insurance on the building was 20000.
Mrs. Jos. Carto of Kansas City, age 12, four feet tall and 75 pounds, was ordered by Judge Porterfield to start school on January 24 after admitting she was married to a 20 year old. When asked why she was not in school she said she was married and needed to stay home. The judge set the start for Monday and she agreed.
Mrs. Ely reads a Mothers' Club paper urging cleanliness as public duty. It argues every child belongs to the State, promotes home care over institutions, and warns that dirty habits, contaminated milk, and improper feeding cause child deaths. It cites six million American babies dead per decade and calls for society to act as guardian when parents fail.
Editor Eylar and his family depart Monday for a month long southwest trip with stops in Houston San Antonio Galveston and El Paso Texas where they will visit Judge A S J Eylar. During absence editorial duties will be covered by Grant McKibben and readers are asked to send in news.
Col W L Curry reports 4897 Ohio veterans died in 1910 with 716 widows. Pension disbursements totaled about 15 997 539, the second largest in the U S. A Washington Pension Bureau fire destroyed thousands of records though pensions remain paid locally.
Samuel Beresford assistant cashier of the Second National Bank Cincinnati committed death by own action last Wednesday night by jumping into the Little Miami River near Twightwee below Loveland. His body was found tied to a tree partly in the water. Coroner Coe of Hamilton County approved removal to Cincinnati. Beresford had recently shown stroke symptoms and had asked for leave to see a physician. He lived at 3144 Gaff Avenue.
Crime decreased in Ohio as 674 prisoners were received in the penitentiary last year, down from 728 the year prior. Four executions were carried out.
