Murray Titus writes from Lucknow on December 1 1910 about starting housekeeping in a new field. He describes meals prices and daily routines with the physics professor and Khawaswan, visits to parks and mosques, a holiday Allahabad exposition, and reflections on homesickness and family letters.
A heavy freight train hauling fourteen coal cars derailed after a draw bar broke near the East Fork bridge at Williamsburg. The incident damaged the track, delayed traffic about five hours, and reduced most cars to unusable. The engineer and fireman were hardly hurt. Local coal dealers bought the dumped coal at a discount.
Lowell Roudebush argues for locating the Agricultural Experiment Farm on soil representative of county conditions and warns against high public land costs. He says the farm will raise land values nearby, benefit education, and in ten years people will wonder why it took so long.
The U S Survey Quarter Boat Ohio No 8 arrived in Maysville Tuesday night with about 16 government employees to build a lock and dam one half mile east of the brickyard. Congress approved 15 million for waterways with Ohio allotted 6 million to construct four locks and dams from Maysville to Cincinnati to keep the river navigable year round except when frozen, with a minimum 9 feet water between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh.
A Williamsburg circulation sought signatures for a First National Bank stock offering of 25000 dollars with 72 shareholders. Incorportation papers sent to Washington. several site options exist for a permanent home and timing is weeks away. Farmers and Merchants Bank of Williamsburg, cashier J B Cover, reports strong business. Officers named: N T Daily president, James H White VP, A E Earheart, J P Allen, Jos M Davidson, Jos A Dyer, M H Glancy, L F Hulick, John A Hugo. James E McKeever chosen cashier.
The officers of Company K and all First Regiment units are invited to a Gibson House banquet in Cincinnati hosted by Colonel Hake next Saturday night. The event promises a swell time and urges attendance by all members.
Louis M. Walker and wife were shot by Miss Phelps in Hamilton last Saturday. Walker, a Batavia I O O F member, is in poor health and unlikely to recover. his wife was only lightly injured. The 66 year old shooter surrendered to the sheriff, claiming enemies poisoned her, and faces possible Dayton asylum commitment.
The Batavia village council met January 2 1911 and appropriated funds for six months covering town expenses and bills. They tabled a franchise request from Citizens Independent Telephone Co of Williamsburg to rewrite the ordinance and present at the next meeting.
A former Newtonsville youth, Will Bolser, was released from an indictment in Cincinnati last week. He had faced Hamilton County charges over altering a Milford bank check from eight to eighteen dollars. The notice says he has improved and is offered a good position, with hope he stays on a lawful path.
NEW ENTERPRISE The Ohio Chair Company of Williamsburg started a few months ago by Chas A Frazier, formerly of Williamsburg Furniture Co., has been operating profitably. Last week it booked two orders from eastern firms for 8500 chairs to be given away as premiums. The firm stocks about 12 chair patterns, all strong and well finished. Frazier buys stock in knockdown form from across the United States, varnishes, assembles and wraps the chairs for trade, primarily dealing with eastern firms.
The Batavia town council installed storm doors at the town hall to save fuel and keep occupants warmer. Builders Gomien & Jerimah report the project as money well spent and beneficial to those in the rear of the room.
The Batavia township trustees re organized with W F Apple as president F M Kain as clerk and J N Lewis as clerk of the board of health. Several bills were allowed and the board adjourned. The Batavia township school board re organized January 2 electing Frank Dial president and F M Kain clerk effective January 1 1911.
The Friday night performance Polly of the Circus under Miss Harriet Jones yielded about 120 dollars net for the Public Library fund. Credit is given to A. Glancy for scenery and to the troupe for a successful show. Town council urged to create a library fund to cover rent and utilities so membership fees fund new books.
The Batavia Concert Band hosts the third Batavia Lecture Course entertainment this Wednesday at 8 15 p m featuring magic and wind reading. The act previously performed at Highland Park Chautauqua last summer but daylight hours limited illusions. Reserved orchestra seats available at Nash's.
Circuit Court upholds common pleas ruling in Vena Hatfield vs Cincinnati Milford and Loveland Traction Co. Jury awarded 3200 dollars, reduced to 2200 on motion for new trial. Hatfield, 16, of near Elenor, alleged left arm injury from car starting while she stood on the step dragged about 100 yards. Attorneys for both sides listed. Also reports the December 28 Dayton wedding of Paul Pathe and Miss Jennie Cook at the bride's home.
Brown County jurors were summoned last Thursday and Friday with twelve more called on Saturday to hear a condemnation case against Wooster and Cincinnati Turnpike companies. Judge W. R. Walker presided in the common pleas court as voir dire and trial preparation proceeded. The jury will assess the road’s value after inspecting the pikes at Milford and hearing witnesses on Tuesday.
The Fred Zellar residence on the old Kyle farm near Mt Carmel burned at about 6 am Monday. The blaze started on the roof at a defective chimney flue and the house with most contents was destroyed. Loss estimated around 3000 dollars with small insurance.
