Bethel board selects a woman for the presidency as Lorella Roter serves as clerk. Standing with the new leader are Carl Copenhaver as member and Loretta Kratzer, a trainee, with other board members present.
Col rankin harrison of El Rancho Rankin near New Town launches a gimmick by sending 6000 letters offering engraved one dollar or five dollar certificates for a dining evening at El Rancho Rankin. 5000 letters contain genuine dollars and 1000 contain five dollars. The plan surprises diners and draws letters of thanks while drawing a complaint from a woman who didn’t receive a letter and accusations of bribery.
A motel under a colonel’s promotion remodels the pool area into a South Seas paradise with heated enclosure and segregated spa facilities. A new large TV room overlooking fish nets and tropical decor will anchor the facility while a canyon of steps leads guests to multiple dining and lounging spaces.
The Williamsburg Independent League basketball tournament starts Sunday with Mt Crab facing Felicity at 1 15 pm and Amelia meeting Batavia at 2 30 pm. Williamsburg and Fayetteville earned first round byes and will play winners of the adjacent games in the next round. Final standings show Williamsburg, Fayetteville, Amelia, Batavia, Melisity, Drab.
Williamsburg reports the Loan Fund gained $150 from a double header last Saturday, lifting the total to $1322 toward the $2500 goal. Women teachers coached by Ed Wright defeated the senior girls 8 to 11 in the prelim, while the men teachers edged the Granddaddy Wildcats 69 to 63.
County officials, with Ohio Department of Health approval, seek options to purchase sites for two sewage treatment plants in Mt. Carmel Hall Run Creek and Shayler Run, with capacity to serve current population plus 10 to 15 percent. An additional plant area near Viking Village is planned for the existing plant. Funding includes a federal Accelerated Public Works Act grant covering half the cost, with the rest through assessments and revenue bonds.
Goshen school superintendent Robert Gower will be tried Monday on an assault and battery charge filed by Clyde Alten of Rt. 2 Goshen. Alten accuses Gower of unlawfully punishing his stepson Larry the Marshal last Oct. 27 at the school. Judge John J. Houston of Brown County Common Pleas Court will hear the case because Judge M Dale Osborne, who became Common Pleas Judge Jan 1, held the preliminary hearing and certified the case to Common Pleas Court.
A stove overheated and sparked a blaze destroying the two story frame house of Orie Feltner north of Day Heights. Loss estimated between 5000 and 6600 dollars. Milford Fire Department under Chief Paul Bush and Mt Repose Fire Department fought the blaze.
The council authorized contractor Clifford Bacelier to begin the first phase of remodeling the municipal building to become an all purpose community meeting place. Joseph Mager was appointed chief of police, Jess Smith rehired as village engineer, and Judge John D. Erhardt reappointed village solicitor. The village will codify ordinances and publish a new code book for the next meeting.
Jim Haney reports Clermont County Humane Society urges funds to replace the cramped four-compartment dog cage at the county pound. Humane agent Jim Begley found 19 dogs in the cage during a Sunday feeding. a planned building to house impounded dogs was halted by finances. The society relies on dues and donations, with memberships rising after December outreach, to finance projects and reduce such situations. The group can be reached at 162 N Third St Batavia with annual dues of 2 dollars.
The Clermont Warren County Board of Realtors earned a second place trophy and a certificate of appreciation at the Ohio Association of Real Estate Boards awards dinner in Columbus on January 14. The trophy recognized the board for the second highest membership percentage increase in Class B. Joel T. Wilson of Milford serves as board president.
Burglars pried the front door of Dick and Ray's General Store and rolled a safe from the store and the local post office. The safe held $4500 in money and stamps. The break in was discovered at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Ray Paul and Dick Caldwell own the business and postmaster, respectively. Sheriff Deri and deputies insured the area.
Milford residents report Mrs. Marie E. Spencer found dead at 103 Main St. by an accumulation of newspapers at the door. Neighbors investigated. death believed due to natural causes after about two days.
Milford allocates 458 071 28 for 1963 expenditures with 105 826 for general funds including 15 225 for officials and office costs. Loveland Miami school begins enrollment for adult education classes this week through Thursday in the school lobby. Lee Majcewsky directs the program.
A Loveland suit filed by Donald J. Samad via attorney Frank J. Lonigano seeks an injunction to stop paying part of city officials' salaries from water and sewer funds. The action targets City Manager William H. Shawhan and Finance Director Bert J. Smith and alleges misallocation of funds, with requests to reimburse the sewer fund for prior payments.
Congress member from the sixth district announced nominations for 1963 to the U S service academies. Principal candidates include Paul Ward Mulberry Michael Shoemaker Lucasville Dennis Lehman Portsmouth and William Smith Peebles among others with 11 Countians named for the Naval, Military and Air Force academies plus alternates.
Clermont County will rebuild nine bridges this spring replacing wooden spans with corrugated pipe. County Engineer Carl H. Rush outlined the plan as commissioners directed an estimated material cost and bid advertisements. Bridges span Tealtown Road Manila Road Cedarville Road Hawley Road Newtonsville Hutchins Road Amelia Olive Branch Road and Jackson Pike area.
