Batavia Beard Contest Seeks entrants for sesquicentennial

Don Evans, Batavia businessman, recruits entrants for a beard and mustache contest linked to the 150th birthday celebration. The event, open to Batavia or Clermont County residents, runs July 22 to 26 with a $3 entry fee. Entries must be in by July 1 and prizes go to the longest neatest most unusual colorful curly or manliest facial hair.

County considers annex addition for more office space

County commissioners authorize Engineer Carl H. Rush to study adding to the courthouse annex for extra office space. If feasible, bonds from the general fund would finance up to 100000 dollars with no tax increase. The plan includes repairs, basement finishing, and relocation of Welfare and courthouse services.

Sesqui Seal and Theme Winners Named in Batavia

Sue Hamilton and Mrs. Ruth Glaze won Batavia Sesqui centennial seal and theme contests as part of the 150th birthday celebration. Hamilton’s seal features Ezekial Demmitt’s cabin and Glaze’s theme reads Honoring our Heritage Forming our Future. Winners receive 25 dollar savings bonds and runner ups get festival tickets. The judges gave honorable mention to Lynda Beck.

Fuhr Named Ohio Civil Defense Public Information Officer

Ralph D J Fuhr, former associate editor of The Bethel Journal and ex publisher of The Williamsburg Times, becomes public information officer for the Ohio Civil Defense program at Fort Hayes Columbus. Anti-Smoking Program In Schools Pays Off

Clermont County American Cancer Society reports two years of school based anti smoking outreach led by Education Chairman Mrs Ettamaye E Jones. Schools requested films posters and literature with Loveland area schools showing strong coverage over the past year. 1260 students viewed films during a two week period and take home literature was distributed. The unit offers free showing services to clubs and groups via 852 7321.

Three Youths Escape Detention Then Are Apprehended

Three youths escaped from detention by sawing through bars and a door in the probate and juvenile court offices on Tuesday night. They fled in a stolen car owned by Lester Mallwood and abandoned it at the Rt 125 and 222 corner after it ran out of gas. Randall Mell, Pierce township constable, captured them around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday as they walked toward Amelia, following a house-to-house search by multiple police departments. The Courier notes a correction regarding engagement announcements published in this edition.

County Government Receives 2 Million Dollar Budget

County commissioners Friday appropriated 2 086 027 for 1964 operations, down nearly 861 000 from 1963. The plan lists 942 671 for all departments, 240 000 for welfare, 943 356 for roads and bridges, with reductions offset by balances for TB care and school funding.

Batavia Police Chief Ed ward H Colonel announced his bid for sheriff of Clermont County on the Democratic ticket. He has 22 years in policing, 17 as Batavia chief, plus World War II Air Corps service, and serves as Deputy Clerk of Courts. He helped found the Tri County Fraternal Order of Police and has a Kentucky Colonel honor. He is married with one daughter Becky Jo.
