County health board sets hearing on Morris status

Clermont County health board schedules a January hearing on the job status of William Morris food inspector after probation and a state critique of his performance and administration. The board also adopts the Ohio plumbing code with new registration for plumbers and outlines plans for a two year meat inspection program with licensed veterinarians as inspectors.

Moscow boy wins 17th annual First Baby Contest

John Quentin Logan, son of Roger and Dolly Logan of Rt. 1 Moscow, arrived at 7 18 a.m. on January 1 at Bethesda Hospital weighing five pounds two ounces. Attending physician was Dr. Richard Bryant of Cincinnati.

In Milford county reports two newborns arrive in early January. Sally Jane Taylor born January 2 at 4 46 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital weighs seven pounds with Dr Charles K Ferguson in attendance. Larry Allen Slater Jr born January 3 at 11 59 p.m. at Brown County Hospital Georgetown weighs six pounds four and a half ounces. Grandparents listed include Mildred Taylor Michael Jackson and Mary Brock among others. Local merchants offer gifts from $5 trades to savings accounts and assorted baby items.

Batavia Village Council named Russell J. Speidel solicitor to succeed Forrest Ely who planned retirement. William B. Dowdney elected vice mayor. New oathes were taken by Ralph Clyburn, Walter Haglage, Augusta Hulick, and board members Herbert Hoberg, Al Keller, and William Dowdney. Committees appointed including firemen pensions, street work, health, and lights.

Cartier Enters Democratic Race For State Representative

Milford resident Lawrence W. Carlier, partner in Douglas and Carlier, announces a bid in the Democratic primary for State Representative. He is a Miami University alumnus and 1959 University of Cincinnati Law School graduate with early work for Ohio’s Industrial Commission. He lists family ties, local council experience, and cemetery committee service among his qualifications. Police report Batavia has had no traffic fatalities since 1956 and notes a salary increase for Patrolman Gary Ward from 3900 to 4200 after a three month tenure.

Art Blake Elected Chairman of Clermont County Board

Arthur Blake has been elected chairman of the Clermont County Board of Commissioners, succeeding Charles Hook who will not seek re election but will run for sheriff. Blake, finishing his first year as commissioner, was named chairman on his 53rd birthday Monday. He urged continued cooperation to keep the county in the black by curbing expenses. The board approved raises for several staff, including Maureen Howard to 310 dollars monthly, Marylon Wisby to 285, Carroll Gregg to 250, Mrs. Gladys Gregg to 220, and others, with a mix of increases and a salary cut for Betty the clerk at the clinic who will work half time.

Batavia Board Sets Special Election for New High School

Batavia voters will decide a high school project as Paul Lewis and John Bucher join the Board of Education succeeding Joseph Remley and Charles Tilbury. Louis Wolf becomes Presider to replace Tilbury who seeks the Republican bid for prosecuting attorney in May. Joseph Urban is vice president and Robert Griffith remains clerk. Richard Jamieson, Batavia mayor, serves as the fifth school board member.

Auditor to Publish Delinquent Tax List

County Auditor Earl Metzger announced that names of persons delinquent in personal and classified property taxes will be published. Payment on or before January 25 will prevent publication in the two county newspapers for two weeks starting January 30.

Tilbury Seeks Clermont County Prosecutor Seat

Charles F. Tilbury 43 of 395 Woodside Dr Batavia announces candidacy for Clermont County Prosecuting Attorney in the May Republican primary. He has served seven years as assistant to Ralph A Hill and as legal advisor to the county auditor and building department. He sits on the Batavia board of education and has held office in local clubs and veterans groups. He is married with three children.

Free public skating rinks open in Clermont County

Nick Visnic announces three rinks open and five more planned across Clermont County. Rinks at McGuire Field Willowville Withamsville Mt Repose and sites near Rt 28 were funded and supervised by local groups and fire departments. Additional rinks planned for Amelia Batavia Bethel New Richmond and Williamsburg with safety rules for ice conditions speed limits and fire restrictions.

Felicity School Bonds Purchased for New Classrooms

Felicity's $176 000 school bonds bearing 3 5/8 percent interest were bought at par by Provident Bank and McDonald and Co Cincinnati. Attorneys Peck Shafer Williams John S Moore said bonds issued December 27 will deliver with accrued interest and a $532 premium, slated for mid January payment. The issue was approved November 5 to finance eight new classrooms.

State Seeks Bids On Clermont and Hamilton Highway Projects

Ohio Department of Highways invites bids by 16 a.m. January 21, 1954, for three projects in Clermont and Hamilton counties. Clermont projects include grading drainage and paving 0.5 mile of De La Palma Road with a bridge over Cain Run, and paving 0.57 mile of St. Rt. 131 with a bridge over Stonelizk Creek. In Hamilton County bids cover paving 0.17 mile of US 50 in Whitewater and Columbia townships.

Legion invites public to hear Art Mehring

Art Mehring, safety education and traffic analysis officer for the Cincinnati Police Department, will be guest speaker for the Frank W. Weaver Post American Legion in Batavia at 8 p.m. Friday. The meeting is open to the public, said Joe Greber, past activities chairman.
