Tests Under Way To Repair Break On State Road

State Highway Department field men from Columbus plan tests this week to fix a slide on the new asphalt road to the former Judge Hulick property west of Batavia. The slide stems from soil conditions and the break halts traffic. Repair falls to the state as part of the Rt. 74 relocation project. Insurance covers the damaged guard rail west of Batavia, with 500 feet to be replaced.

Auditor Warns Tax Delinquents Crackdown Planned

County Auditor J F Paschal targets delinquent taxpayers who failed to pay 110000 last year amid long standing delinquencies. Only two foreclosures in 16 years noted. Total delinquent amount reaches 300000. Auditor will cite delinquents to the prosecutor for action.

Batavia Village Drops Refuse Collection February First

Batavia Village will stop garbage collection on February 1 with the cost shifting to households at $1.50 per home under a new plan. Mayor Richard Jamieson cites loss of intangible tax revenue and reduced village funds as the reasons, noting reduced mayoral court jurisdiction and low real estate tax contributions.

County Sets Cost For Rebuilding Two Roads

County commissioners plan to study the cost of constructing one mile of Clough and Branch Hill-Guinea Pikes to federal standards. If eligible for federal aid, half the expenses would be covered by Washington. Planned sections include Clough from Hamilton line and Branch Hill-Guinea Pike from Rt. 28. Two more roads may join the federal secondary program: Woodville Pike and Bethel-New Richmond Pike.

Fuller to Head 18th Decennial Census District

Don E. Fuller of Chillicothe named district supervisor for the 18th Decennial Census covering Clermont, Pickaway, Ross, Pike, Scioto, Fayette, Highland, Adams and Brown counties. He will oversee 21 crew leaders and 365 enumerators with district HQ at 85 87 Mulberry St Chillicothe. Census begins April 1 under federal mobilization that includes 160000 enumerators nationwide.

Clermont County Planning Commission commends its overdue report from the Board of Commissioners explaining each government unit's duties authority and budgets in plain terms. The open meeting to release the document is 8 p.m. Monday Jan 18 at the courthouse with names of officials and key facts for the public.

New Mayor Dies Buried After Coin Toss Victory

Funeral services for Mayor Frank Strasinger were held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Lew F. White Memorial with burial in Green Mound Cemetery. Strasinger, elected by a coin flip after a tied 180 votes with Al Plotner, died Friday at home. He is survived by his widow Mary E. Shasinger two sons Francis and Frankie and three daughters Margaret Peddicord Percella Anter and Neville Beach.

Probe Continues In Death By Fire

Assistant Chief Clifford Bachelier of BMOP Fire Department and the state fire marshal continued the investigation into the fatal fire that killed 65 year old Asberry Igo. Neighbors found his trailer on Rt 222 near Rt 125 about 3 a.m. Sunday. Igo died from burns. Services were held at Kennedy funeral home in Bethel. He is survived by three children Ruby McMillan Dorothy Fox and Paul Igo.

Town Eyes Meter Revenue To Hire Full Time Police

Felicity plans 55 new parking meters this month to fund a full time patrolman by diverting half of meter revenue for salary and to cover meter costs. The force has been reduced to a single part time officer after prior salary cuts and staff changes.

Tax Receipts Dip Again in Week Ending Dec 19

Joseph T. Ferguson reported prepaid tax receipts for the week ending December 19 fell below the prior year. Total sales to date reached 120,257,560, up 14.5 percent year over year, while weekly and Clermont County receipts declined versus 1958 figures.

Goodwill Executive Speaks to Bethel Lions Club

Rev Bryce Nichols executive director of Goodwill Industries spoke to Bethel Lions Club about disability rates and the charity’s impact. He noted four in a hundred people become handicapped and that 3 900 handicapped individuals were aided last year with 239 placed in industry. Nichols announced plans for a Batavia store and referral plant in 1961.

League To Observe Government Week In Clermont County

The League of Women Voters of Clermont County will abstain from evening meetings in January and join countywide Know Your Government Week. A kick off at 8 p m January 18 at the courthouse will present the first annual report for all county offices. An afternoon session at 1 p m January 21 in the county courtroom will feature talks by local officials, followed by a jail visit.

New Postal Zone Begins On Feb 1

Mount Washington gains mail service replacing Clermont County Batavia office routes drop to four. Amelia also loses 757 families to new zone numbers 45 joining 30 and 44. Western Clermont area residents west of Glen Este Road and Clough Road receive new addresses. a mounted route will serve Union township east area with Richard Pleimann as carrier. Batavia post moves to new quarters in Batavia municipal building on Main Street.

Metro Phone Service Expansion Heads for PUCO Approval

In Loveland area, Cincinnati Metropolitan telephone service may extend into the Loveland Exchange pending Public Utilities Commission of Ohio approval. About 2700 customers would be canvassed. 60 percent support is needed. Fox Ridge Acres Civic Association found strong support with 78 of 79 responses favoring the proposal.
