Hayden Delivers Nomination Speech for Speaker of House

John Hayden representing Clermont county in the General Assembly delivered the nominating address for speaker of the house. Critics praised the speech for William M. McCullough of Miami county as among the best in years. Hayden was named Chairman of the House Inaugural Committee for Governor-elect Bricker and Chairman of the Highways Committee with 23 members, plus Vice-Chairman of the Education Committee. He was re-elected last November by the second highest county vote, defeating his Democratic opponent by over 2000 votes.

Miles Eveland of Miamiville is a sophomore tenor in the Ohio Wesleyan University Men’s Glee Club. The group will broadcast from station WHKC Columbus on the Mutual Network January 14 from 1 30 to 2 p m EST, heard on many mutual stations. Eveland is an Alpha Tau Omega member and Terrace Park Union High School graduate.

Died Suddenly 67 Year Old Afton Farmer Mark Brothers

Mark Brothers of Afton two miles east of Batavia died suddenly while plowing Friday morning due to heart ailment. He had a weak heart for months and defied medical advice by working in the field. Survived by widow Elizabeth Brothers, son John, and daughter Mrs. Mary Simmons. Services were held in Batavia at 2 p.m. under Wm. Stirling Moore Funeral Home. Burial in Union Cemetery.

Found in Haystack A Man Escaped Nebraska Asylum

A mentally distressed man, about 35, believed to have escaped a Nebraska asylum, was found buried up to his neck in a haystack on the Wm. Cowquill farm at Hamersville Friday. Neighbors had seen a naked man wading East Fork creek the day before. a posse searched the area. Discovered by Cowquill and County Probation Officer Taxon Briggs around 10:30 A.M. He cannot name his address and Williamsburg officials hold him pending identification.

Clermont county budget completed with savings of 6009

After grueling sessions the Clermont County Commissioners trimmed the 1939 budget to 277175.66 removing funds from Auditor and Treasurer offices and the County Home for the Aged while saving about six thousand dollars. Changes include new county board appointments and staff reassignments at the courthouse and related offices.
