Batavia unemployment office to close amid state economy push

Ohio Bureau of Unemployment Compensation will close Batavia office and run others part time. In peak years Batavia handled 1.5 million dollars in checks and 1,500 claims weekly, with job placement aiding eight of ten Clermont Countians. Columbus says annual savings exceed 132000 with no service cuts, but travel to Cincinnati may burden job seekers and reduce take home pay.

Unemployed Worker Fined for State Compensation

Charles R. Bickett of New Richmond was fined 10 dollars and costs by Batavia Mayor John F. Paschal for drawing unemployment compensation while earning wages from a Cincinnati firm. He earned 63.75 dollars for contracting work the same week he received 27.50 dollars from Ohio. He pleaded guilty and must return the state check plus two weeks’ pay.

Two Men Injured In Highway Crash Near Williamsburg

Two men were injured in a late Friday head on collision on State Route 74 near Williamsburg. Glenn Garman of Williamsburg and Walton Finfrock of Hamilton were involved. Garman suffered a leg fracture, multiple cuts, and a back injury and was taken to Christ Hospital in Cincinnati.

Withamsville Firemen Reelect Schraerges and Name Officers

The Withamsville Volunteer Fire Department reelected chief Clifford G. Schaerges and appointed Carl A. Shepherd as president, Arthur Young as vice president, Sam Disney as treasurer, Pete Hechter as assistant chief, and Joe Graber as officer. A wicker and furnace are installed to heat the fire house, a spokesman said.

Williamsburg's blood drive Friday fell seven pints short of its quota. Nearly 130 people donated despite rain and sleet, though some were turned away due to not meeting physical requirements. The 'Burg Junior Women's Club publicized the effort and thanked donors.

Brothers jailed on morals charge

Two teenage brothers are confined to Clermont County jail in Batavia on a morals charge involving their 15 year old sister. The youths were taken into custody by county police over the weekend as officials investigated the matter filed by their parents.

Filing Date Fees Announced By Election Board Clerk

S L Larkin clerk of the Clermont County Board of Elections in Batavia announces the February 6 petition filing deadline for the May 6 primary. Filing costs are 0.5 percent of the salary for the office sought, minimum one dollar. Several counties have petitions but none filed yet, with many needing 100 signatures. Nine offices to be on the ballot. incumbents likely to run.

Principal Ratcliff Announces Changes In School Ages

Principal Ratcliff announced new admission rules for Wilhamsville Tabasco district for 1952 53. First graders will be children born before November 1 while those born between November 1 and January 10 must pass a readiness test. Kindergarten eligibility shifts to permit entry by fifth birthday before November 1 with readiness testing for late births. For 1953 54 the first grade will open to children whose sixth birthday is before October 1 with kindergarten eligibility still tied to the fifth birthday and readiness testing for October births.

Batavia Colonel Receives Active Duty Call For Europe Defense

Army Reserve Col. Byron M. Barbeau of Batavia reported for active duty Monday with the Eastern Atlantic Division Corps of Engineers at Ft. Belvoir Virginia. He will help map plans for the defense of Europe Iceland and North Africa. Barbeau commanded an engineer combat group in World War II and fought with Patton's Third Army. He was local sales manager for McHugh Co. in Chicago.

Court of Honor Awards Eagle Badge at Batavia Scout Event

Senior Scout Post 263 hosted a Court of Honor with Rotarians and guests.
