West bound N and W passenger train from Portsmouth to Cincinnati narrowly avoided disaster on Batavia bridge when wheel side bars broke and whirled, destroying the cab and injuring the engineer by escaping steam. An extra engine towed the disabled locomotive to safety. fireman unharmed.
A 1919 Ohio analysis accuses Governor Cox of political maneuvering to block income tax and other revenue laws. It argues Democratic votes are withheld, Republican efforts blocked by vetoes and indifference, and suggests the governor seeks to shift blame to the legislature. Observers say Cox pursues masterly inactivity to fault the GOP for stalled reforms.
After January the Food Administration promises a lower sugar price of 153 6? cents but ships only promises. Officials say more details will follow as enforcement of price laws for essentials remains weak. Citizens rely on sugar while government weighs action.
The Ancor site near Newtown is being considered by the State Board as a potential home for the feeble minded due to overcrowded current quarters. A committee surveys several sites including Glendale, with Ancor viewed as most favorable and railway access noted as a drawing card, though some details remain under reconsideration.
The 100-year-old Milford flour mill on the Little Miami owned by Scott Bros. burned last Thursday evening after firefighters deployed four hose lines. A large stock of flour, feed and wheat was on hand. adjacent property was saved. The mill valued at about $85,000 carried $15,000 insurance. Origin of the fire remains unknown.
Charles Magee Adams of Milford has a story titled Todd's Placage accepted by the Saturday Evening Post a sign he has arrived as a writer. He is a Milford High School and Ohio State University graduate and son of Mr and Mrs Charles Adams of Milford.
The January 1 effective auto license law will raise funds for both state and local governments. City and county revenues split between city and state for road repairs, with Batavia keeping funds for local streets. Townships share similarly. The scheme adds new taxes on commercial vehicles and farm wagons. Rates: pleasure cars under 26 hp eight dollars yearly. 26–85 hp twelve dollars. 86 hp or more twenty dollars plus per hundred pounds of vehicle weight and load. maximum truck payment about sixty eight dollars for a five ton vehicle.
Reports from Florida said Miles Bicking who is wintering there suffered a stroke but was later corrected to a severe heart attack. The second attack occurred as he rallied, indicating a relapse from his initial condition.
Mt Holly recalls the silver wedding celebration for Mr and Mrs Olin Fagin on New Year’s Day with about 160 guests. Attendants included Miss Nellie Blosser of Washington DC and gifts ranged from a quilt by the Ladies’ Helping Circle to a 40 coin ribbon in a pocket. A luncheon, music and social time followed with wishes for a long prosperous life.
The Presbyterian church held its annual get together on December 29 with 125 members and their families attending a 7 pm dinner. Toasts on Church Work and Activities followed led by P F Jamieson with judges Nichols Young and Mc Donald among the speakers. Music and readings by Mrs Moore and Mrs Norton topped an evening described as very enjoyable and anticipatory of future gatherings.
Colonel Langhorne Tab Anderson owner of the Point au View stock farm near Maysville Kentucky will establish a similar place on the East Fork of the Little Miami River at Elk Lick near Batavia in Clermont county. He bought the Paul Moore farm for about 30000 dollars comprising 182 acres once owned by General Richard Collins. The property features a brick colonial style mansion with 20 rooms finished in walnut. Anderson plans grounds improvements and breeding saddle and show horses. Judge Swing owns a nearby farm not included in the sale. Clermont county land is being bought by Kentucky farmers, who are welcomed.
The Owensville Community Center held in the Odd Fellows hall on January 2 drew a large, enthusiastic audience despite subzero temperatures. The program featured home talent performances, a reading from Browning by Nell Mitchell, a boys chorus, and a vocal quartet. Hon. C. Kearns, Owensville's congressman, delivered a memorable address arguing against a Prussian military system, opposing a big army, and supporting the League of Nations treaty with minor reservations.
Kirk Hamilton entertained friends from Oxford for the holidays and his gentleman guest. Kathleen Ashburn hosted a Conservatory of Music group in Cincinnati on Main Street. William Moore hosted two parties with cards and dancing at Spring Street. The Glancys hosted a large card club night with festive decor. Mrs. H. F. Buerkle hosted a bridge club with refreshments. Jean McDonald entertained a group of young friends.
Mrs H M Moore hosted a New Year’s Day bridge gathering with rooms festively decorated in Christmas colors. An elegant two course luncheon followed for a list of invited ladies and escorts including Mesdames Nichols Griffith Berry Hicks Justice McDonald Werner Glancy Parrott Hamilton Holick Spaidel Ashburn Tatman Norton Griffith Rush Griffith Van Horn Moore and Misses Carolyn Moore Anna Glancy.
Mrs. Chas A Frazier of Williamsburg led the Birthday Club gathering on Monday December 29 marking eight years since the group formed. Eight members attended including J B Cover A Le Striton L Miller O P Walker G S Frazier O Knight P W Blrod Bishop A T n B E Rush and G A Frasier with a two course luncheon and a warm, festive mood throughout.
The Clermont County Grand Jury reported after a two day session that they examined over 35 witnesses in 8 cases. They presented six bills and ignored two cases, found jail rules faithfully kept, and noted the jail was in first class condition while recommending interior painting and wallpapering as finances permit. Foreman Milton H. Sapp signed the report.

Mrs Mollie Primmer of Neville Ohio was surprised last Saturday night by the Ladies Aid Society of the Methodist church. The group enjoyed music and singing then gathered for an elegant supper after the society meeting with many ladies in attendance.
The town of Batavia sworn in new officials for the next two years on the following Wednesday night led by M. F. Ross as mayor and clerk. O S Slade serves as treasurer Ed Dumford is marshal Geo Henderson heads the board of public affairs with council members Gus Wilke M J Kain J B Miller R W C Gregg O L Lar kin Ralph Titus Earl Fishback J B Fairman and Clearance Slade named to positions.
Kilpatrick Post G A R Goshen thanks the Courier for publishing their petition to Congress opposing ratification of the League of Nations. They claim ratification would weaken the United States and destroy self determination, urging strong opposition nationwide. James Molloy signs the note from 8 V C.
Thieves roaming northern Clermont stole auto tires of various makes and sizes last week across the Stonelick area and along the pike. Ex-Commissioner EH W Patchell lost a Ford tire from a garage, and Marshal Roudebush near Owensville is down two tires. Officials urge owners to mark tires for identification and warn brokers buying stolen tires risk arrest and forfeiture.
The Clermont County Board of Education postpones its regular meeting to January 17. A nonpartisan school measure is before the General Assembly as Senate Bill 202 and House Bill 615 to raise state funds by tax and allocate distributions by county and district needs.
Nearly one hundred delegates attended the Farm Bureau Legislative and Marketing Conference in Clermont county. G T Brown of Tate township led with 66 cards, Tate township the banner unit with 156 memberships. The campaign aims for 2000 memberships and a marketing program was adopted. A cow feeding meeting series led by Ivan Mc Kellip was announced with dates across Batavia Wayne Stonelick and other townships. Reverend Edmund Burdsall of Winchester underwent surgery in Cincinnati and is recovering well.
