Clermont County receives recognition for food production efforts in 1944. Sugar rationing continues with home use limits through January 15. War Production and War Food Administration modify allocations for pressure cookers, alcohol antifreeze, and certain nonfood uses. Tire quotas drop again, civilians face beans and peas rationing, and essential garment fabrics are diverted. Retailers must file ration token applications by January 8 in preparation for February launch.

Lieut Wiseman to Wed Kathleen Kerr in Sidney

Lieut Frank M. Wiseman son of Mr and Mrs J M Wiseman Batavia will wed Miss Kathleen Dolores Kerr daughter of Mr and Mrs O R Kerr Sidney Ohio The vows will be at First Methodist Sidney at 830 pm A reception will follow at a bride’s parent’s home Wiseman recently returned from a year in the South Pacific serving with the Navy amphibian craft The couple will depart for an undisclosed destination after the reception.

Civilians to receive two thirds of 1944 meat supply

The War Food Administration announced 1944 meat allocations will give U S civilians about 67 percent of the total supply, roughly 182 pounds per person for the year. Military and war services will take about 17 percent, with beef leading at 56 percent of that share.

Clermont county’s current tax bill totals 427086.22 with delinquent taxes adding 91833.55, pushing well past half a million. First half 1948 real estate taxes worth 213518.06 will be mailed by County Treasurer John Friend, due by February 14.

Florence Ashburn Transfers to Fort Eustis for X ray Work

Mrs. Florence Ashburn, previously at Smyrna Air Base in Tennessee, is reassigned to Fort Eustis, Virginia, for X ray technic work at the Fort Hospital. She visited Batavia with her sister Mrs. W W Dewdney and leaves Wednesday for the new post after arriving Sunday night.

Welfare department becomes permanent once established

Attorney General Thomas J. Herbert ruled that after a county department of welfare is properly set up by a board of county commissioners the commissioners cannot abolish it. Duties of the soldier's relief commission cannot transfer to the county welfare department. The county home cannot fall under the department without the home superintendent’s consent. Trustees may hand over operation of a county children’s home to the department but may rescind the agreement.

William O Ferree dies after long illness in Batavia

William Ora Ferree of Batavia township dies at home in Water t. After a long illness his funeral was held Saturday from Moore Funeral Home with Rev RAL Budd of Georgetown officiating. He served twelve years as Batavia township trustee and was active in Odd Fellows Masons and Batavia Grange. He is survived by Theresa Curliss Ferree widow and Ora Ferree Jr. The Batavia Odd Fellows paid tribute with a ritual Friday night.

Hobart W. Seyler will become superintendent of the Clairton Works at Carnegie-Illinois Steel upon Frank Marquard’s retirement after 45 years with U. S. Steel. A Batavia Ohio native and Ohio State chemical engineering graduate, Seyler rose from chief chemist to top plant executive and serves as president of the Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Ovens Assn. He is also a trustee at McKeesport Hospital and has ties to Clairton Sportsmen’s Club.

Virginia Speidel WAC officer from Batavia featured in Nashville Banner

2d Lt. Virginia Sue Speidel rises from home management supervisor with the Farm Security Administration to WAC officer. The Batavia, Ohio native, daughter of Mrs. James K. Ashburn, holds a BS from the University of Cincinnati and postgrad study at Western Reserve. Speidel serves as post mess officer at Smyrna Army Air Field and plans to apply her home economics background to Army duties. She trained at Ft. Des Moines, Ft. Devens, and Ft. Oglethorpe before arriving in Smyrna in October 1943.
