County Basketball Resumes Play January Sixth

Clermont County High School Basketball League resumes Friday after a holiday lull. Eight teams compete with Amelia, Batavia, Bethel and Glen Este atop a 3-1 tie. Batavia at Goshen promises sparks, while other week non league games and a New Richmond Garden Club meeting on Jan 12 are noted.

Clermont County Science Award Winners Named

Eight seniors from eight Clermont County high schools gathered in Batavia for a five hour science exam to choose top science students. The winner, Stanley Dennison of Clermont Northeastern, earns a paid trip to Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill New Jersey for student and teacher. Charles Carter of Williamsburg is first alternate and Bart Holman of Batavia is second alternate. The county committee includes Raphael Abell and Dale Seifert.

County Office Demanding Duty Returns After Illness

Stanley Cann, off duty since December 4 due to a heart attack, is reelected chairman of the county commissioners upon returning to duty Tuesday. Ralph Houser is vice chairman and Arthur Blake the other member. Cann plans to resume limited hours starting January 3 and aims to be back full time soon. Blake reports a newly discovered ulcer, and his wife share the stress with an ulcer of her own.

Three Boys Held For Larceny In Clermont County

In Clermont County Juvenile Court last week three youths were charged with petit larceny after an incident at farmer Charles R. DeVaughn s farm on State Route 133. DeVaughn shot one boy in the leg with a .22 pistol during car trouble and held two other youths at gunpoint until a deputy arrived. The wounded boy and his brother live near Williamsburg while the third youth is from Batavia Route 2.

Milford Driver Pinned After Sleepy Crash at Bridge

Bert A Butler 19 of 613 Henry St Bellfontaine was seriously injured when his car struck a bridge abutment at 10 p.m. He suffered lung injuries, facial cuts and knee contusions and was rushed to Our Lady of Mercy Hospital then transferred to Veterans Hospital. State Patrol noted Butler drifted asleep while traveling west. Applications for liquor permits in Ohio are being processed by the Department of Liquor Control for Holly Lanes Inc and Josephine Kattus carryout. Visiting relatives from Springfield, Missouri and Covington, Kentucky spent holidays with Butler’s family.

Retail Sales Rise in Clermont County July to December

Retail sales in Clermont County increased to 506,725 from 467,281 in the July 1 to December 24 period year over year, reflecting growth in some sectors while motor vehicle and house trailer taxes declined from 307,213 to 299,682.

Dr. Barber to Retire After 40 Years of Practice

Dr. C F Barber longtime Clermont County physician retires due to ill health after a career spanning nearly four decades. A New York native, he came to the area in 1927 and served in the U S Medical Corps during World War I. He led the Clermont County Medical Society as president and will move with his wife Louise and son Stephen to Fort Lauderdale Florida this month.

Reynolds May Be New County Humane Agent

Reynolds seeks the county post of assistant warden and is referred to the humane society for approval. If hired by Feb 1 he would draw warden pay from the commissioners and humane agent salary from the society. The society received a $4000 appropriation and a second dog truck is due this month. Fred Wile is chief dog warden with William Thompson as assistant.

Carlier Named Assistant By Co. Prosecutor

Former State Representative Lawrence W. Carlier is appointed by Prosecuting Attorney Robert A. Jones as assistant in County Court, replacing Stephen A. Durkee who resigns to become clerk of the New Richmond board of education. Carlier will handle uniform support and outgoing-state dependency claims. other assistants include Chris Erhardt and Allen Burreson. LaFern Blanton remains secretary.

Milford Railroad Station May Close

Milford's railroad station once serving about 100 passengers daily may be closed and demolished. The Pennsylvania Railroad seeks to change Milford to a non agency carload freight station under Lebanon, abandon Camp Dennison non agency carload freight, and remove the Milford station building. A hearing is set for 10 a.m. Tuesday January 31 before the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio in Columbus.

Ben Franklin Stores Mark 90th Anniversary Year

William Parsons of Parson's Ben Franklin Store Batavia announced that over 2,400 Ben Franklin stores in all 50 states will stage a year long celebration in 1967 marking the founders 90th birthday. Nine Pick-Your-Trip prizes will be awarded with a two week all expense trip for two to anywhere in the continental United States as the top prize.

Vocational Program To Be Explained At Milford Meeting

The Board of Education plans a 1967 68 vocational program for seniors interested in retailing wholesaling and service occupations. The Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a Milford meeting at 4 p m on Tuesday January 10 with Mr Robert Koon from the State Department of Education. The program pairs in school and on the job training and targets local employers and students for mutual benefits.

Judge Returns Nick Konrad To County Jail

In Norwood court Judge David N. Gor man revokes probation and returns Nick Konrad to jail. Konrad is credited 41 days served plus time since surrender on December 17. State Patrolman Michael Lashley cited him in Milford on December 15 for weak lights and driving under suspension. Previously Konrad was sentenced for assaulting William Parris on October 22 with one year driving suspension and fines totaling 150 dollars.

Trustees Table Cruiser Bids Buy Snow Plow

The Trustees of Union Township met on Dec 13 and tabled bids on a 1967 police cruiser for data clarification. They purchased a nine foot snow plow from King Equipment Co for $995 and an A B Dick 610 copier, with total monthly expenditures of $18,662.37 across Cemetery Fund $1,401.53, Road Funds $13,349.80, General Fund $3,132.64, and Miscellaneous $778.40.
