Building Site Purchases Signal Downtown Batavia Growth

In Batavia a surge in building site and business real estate sales is noted. A two story brick and frame building at Main and Second streets changed hands after Roy Allen and B P Kruthaup sold their interests to a new buyer who planned to open an automobile agency yet faced connection hurdles. A Second Street cottage joins the transfer with remodel plans for a residence. Other village upgrades include a new theatre and a garage under construction.

Negro Legion Post Organized in Clermont County

Clermont County Negro veterans applied for a charter for an American Legion post. Temporary officers are Roscoe Jones and Leslie Kennedy with Dale Nichols to install later. March 1 meeting to elect permanent officers for 1946. open to all eligible veterans.

Allen Stewart Named County Dog Warden Beginning March 1

Williams burg announces Allen Stewart will serve as county dog warden starting March 1, replacing acting warden Clarence Farquer. The board reviewed and approved a series of small payments from General Fund and Dog and Kennel Fund including charges to Barrett Brothers Fred Procter Co Standard Oil Service Sta W V Galaway Leslie A Rav er Thomas Hall and Jesse Cross among others totaling several dollars and cents.

Negro veterans honored by Women's Civic Club dinner

The Women’s Civic Club hosted a high school dinner honoring 21 World War II and World War I veterans from Batavia. About 100 attendees heard remarks by Cincinnati councilman Jesse Locker on civilian life. families of veterans were present, including multiple generations of Dixon, Jones, Kennedy, and related names.

Hutchinson Named Deputy Sheriff Succeeds Frank Abbott

Frank Hutchinson 40 of Williamsburg will become Chief Deputy to Sheriff Clyde Derricks succeeding Frank Abbot of Bethel who served fifteen years. Hutchinson endorsed by the Republican Central Committee resigns as Jackson Township trustee and keeps a 100 acre farm on Route 1. Sheriff Derricks and his wife will move to Batavia to use jail quarters. Abbott returns to Bethel.

Father of Courier Editor Passes Away

William H. Tucker father of H. M. Tucker editor of The Courier died after a brief illness at Alliance Ohio Hospital. He was 68 and affiliated with The Morgan Engineering Co. Services were held Sunday at Van Wert Ohio with burial in Ridge Cemetery. He is survived by his son Harry and three other sons William K. of Xenia Theron of Los Angeles and Eugene of Dayton.

Clermont Courier Sold to Fortney in Surprise Move

Jerald B. Fortney purchases the Clermont Courier and will become editor and publisher. He has served in Patton's Third Army earning a Bronze Star and will move his wife and young daughter to Batavia when quarters are ready. The Tucker family plans to move to California for their daughter's asthma care. Fortney is a West Virginia University journalism graduate.

Batavia WAC officer uses German castle as operations base

1st Lt. Virginia Sue Speidel of Batavia Ohio and a former University of Cincinnati co ed leads serving meals to hundreds of U S military and government personnel in Germany from a castle built 1988 92 by the Kaiserin Friedrich Kronberg now used as an officers country club Speidel earned a 1937 bachelor of science in household administration and is a daughter of G W Speidel of Batavia Ohio.

Owensville Man Released on Bond After Shooting

James D. Naylor 46 was freed on 500 bail after shooting his wife Irene 24 in an Owensville cafe. Irene was wounded critically. George Smith owner of the cafe was slightly injured trying to disarm Naylor. Naylor surrendered to Owensville mayor and was jailed on a shooting to kill charge. they have a 14 year old daughter.

One-Room Schools Lead March of Dimes Drive

Wayne No 8 one room school set a county record in the March of Dimes drive raising 100 by the Four H Club. Miamiville school pupils in a rural district gathered 78.02 through their efforts to aid infantile paralysis victims.
