In New Richmond high school gym a crowd watched New Richmond defeat Moscow 31 to 15 for the county girls championship. The girls tournament opened Friday with Williamsburg, Goshen, Milford and Bethel posting early results as boys prep for Batavia Friday.
The Newtown sale held last week by A. M. Ellis auctioneer and Lott Hulick clerk drew the largest turnout in years. It lasted two days and netted $8,109 in cash with horses averaging over $200. Both Ellis and Hulick are noted figures in Clermont county sale circles.
Locust Corner Pierc e township hosts the regular March Farm Bureau meeting Monday at 8 p m at Locust Corner Hall. A good program includes motion pictures and a speaking program. Everyone welcome.
The Batavia Woman's Club will meet Saturday February 28 with Mrs C R Colburn as hostess. The program features How Sultan after Sultan with his pomp abode his hour or two and went his way Omar Kayyam Responses The Koran The New Turkey Mrs H L Nichols will provide music and a Turkish woman's reaction.
The Gregg filling station at Main Street is leased to Standard Oil Co. for five years with possession March 1. Mr. Gregg will run the Hamlet station. J P Wood sells West Batavia restaurant to Cliff Weaver who takes possession March 1. The W D family will occupy the G A property on Broadway. Bee the Courier for news.
Citizens of Batavia and vicinity may hear the Cincinnati Commandery Knights Templar band in a benefit concert at Batavia town hall on Friday evening in March. Directed by P F Jamison of Batavia, the band includes several Batavia musicians. The event is free will offering with no admission.
Jennie Stark Titus born April 9 1844 near Batavia Ohio died February 19 1931 at age 86. She lived in Batavia most of her life active in Clover M E and Batavia M E Churches and in Eastern Star. She married Edwin D Titus and had two children Mrs William Griffith and a son in Manila. She requested no eulogy and rests in God’s mercy after a long life of faith and service.
In sorrow I extend sincere thanks to relatives neighbors and friends for kindness at the sad time of my mother’s passing. Special thanks to floral donors and J Isaac Maham funeral director for efficient services Minnie Titus Griffith.
Locust Corner Grange will hold a regular meeting on March 4 with E Townsley of Locust Corner presenting a world tour via pictures and lecture. Open lecture hour begins at 9 16 and the public is invited to attend.
The Boys Basketball Tour nament of Clermont County begins Friday night at the Batavia Armory with two games on opening day. Large expected crowds fill Batavia as preparations ensure quarters and cats for players. Drawings to be made this afternoon.
Democrats distribute jobs to local supporters. Frank Galbreath of Pt. Pleasant is State Highway Director for Clermont County with Bata via headquarters, overseeing the local workforce. Joseph Moeschel serves as assistant. Earl Canter of Bethel becomes assistant state highway superintendent. G. B. Huntington of Amelia is named appraiser of abutting property and John F. Hartman of Batavia is deputy fire marshal.
Former Clermonter, a widow of Homer McLean, passed away at her daughter Mrs Laura Kunze’s home in Middletown after a prolonged illness. She lived most of her life in the county with pioneer family roots. Survived by son Dr Frank McLean of Columbus and Mrs Kunze, plus three grandsons. Funeral at Maham Funeral Home Williamsburg Monday at 2 p.m. Burial in Williamsburg Union Cemetery.
Miss Ann Elizabeth Behymer and Edward George Keinthel married on February 14 at Christ Church Cincinnati with a reception at the Linton St. Nicholas Hotel. The bride, a Cincinnati schoolteacher and Behymer descendant, is the daughter of Lloyd P. Behymer and cousin of Postmaster Arthur L. Behymer. her grandfather Jerome Behymer of Bethel served in the Civil War.
Eighteen Milford business men formed a group to support farmers and keep commerce local. A Milford Record page ad echoed the pact, urging communities to unite and assist one another.
P. Walker 88, a Civil War veteran and well known county resident of Williamsburg, was struck by a car driven by C. Moore while crossing Main Street Saturday around 7:30 PM. He suffered head and leg injuries. Dr. Hines and Martin were summoned for aid.
An Dublin Opinion note alleges that cat skins are being misrepresented as rabbit skins to supply imitation beaver products.
Edith Winspear Coyle wife of Claude Coyle died Saturday after a brief illness from scarlet fever. She taught at Afton before falling ill. Survived by sister Mrs Stanley Ansteadt. Private funeral Sunday at 10 a.m. Union Cemetery burial.
Mrs. Jennie Stark Titus aged 86 died at her Batavia home Thursday night after weeks of illness. Known as Aunt Jennie Titus, she lived in the area most of her life and for thirty years among residents. Widow of Edwin Titus ex commissioner of Clermont county, mother of Mrs. W G Griffith and Major Isaac E Titus in Manila. Funeral held at M E Church Saturday with Rev Cherrington and Rev J P Martin officiating. Brice Hendrixson sang. Burial in Union cemetery.
The County Board of Health urges keeping schools open during an outbreak to control contagion. Teaching staff monitor sick children and report cases for quarantine, preventing spread as children scatter when schools close. Afton cases show varied diagnoses and quarantine decisions, with a State Health bulletin available at the county office.
About 6000 people attended institutes in Dermont County from February 16 to 21. Sessions in Moscow Edenton Owensville Amelia and Bethel featured speakers including C R Milner F M Hendrix Elizabeth Masters F G Hall J Gordon and H R Muller. Local committees earned praise for organizing and electing officers to continue next year.
The 12th National Flower and Garden Show will be at Music Hall in Cincinnati from March 7 to 15, 1931. Flower lovers will see stunning blossoms and well-kept lawns, with guidance on cultivation and production. The Rock Gardens have grown popular and attendees can choose flowers for home gardens.
The county board tallied expenses from labor to supplies, authorized advertising for a physician at the County Home and Jail, set jail guard funds at 800, allotted 180.60 for delinquent land sale ads, and approved plumbing bids awarding to Dennison 694 for work.
Health authorities urge strict attention to farm water supplies this spring. Prolonged drought has caused filth around farm buildings, requiring precautions to prevent surface water and animals from contaminating water sources. Concrete well curbing and spring protection blocks are recommended for dug or drilled wells.
Attempted burglary at the A and P store in New Richmond Sunday morning was foiled when intruders fled after hearing approaching footsteps. The night hawks had not visited the town for some time and departed quickly, losing their nerve.
Vocational agriculture teachers in Ohio report germination tests on seed corn, with 8 to 56 percent viability for some lots. Dr. J B Park of Ohio State urges composite sampling and ear testing if below 9 percent. Two hundred high school programs assisted farmers, testing nearly one million ears in 161 schools using rag doll germination testers.
Charles Hoerner of Batavia celebrated his 17th birthday on Monday. On Sunday he and 16 Hoerner family members attended a party in his honor at the home of his niece, Mrs. Anna Doerr, in Bond Hill.
